UGC Fake University List 2026: The University Grants Commission has issued a warning in May 2026 where it mentions 32 fake universities operating in India in 12 states and union territories. The increasing presence of fake universities in India is indeed very alarming, considering that most fake universities operate from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh only. Fake universities cannot be authorized under the University Grants Commission Act of 1956 and, hence, have no right to issue any type of degree certificate. The situation is indeed very alarming for those students enrolled at these fake universities, as there is no possibility for recognition of the degrees they obtain from such illegal institutions.

For securing their future prospects as professionals, students need to be very wary of this issue when they enroll for admissions in 2026. As per UGC guidelines, students should verify the accreditation status of the college they wish to join by visiting the official website www.ugc.gov.in. The important considerations here would be whether the institution has an accreditation under Sections 2(f) or 3 and the mandatory accreditations for professional programs from authorities such as AICTE and NCTE. This is a vital caution as students have shown increased interest in distance learning and private colleges recently.
