The protest was held against alleged irregularities in the recruitment process and the reported high handed behaviour of department clerks. The protesting teachers said they have been fighting for justice for the last 10 years. They claimed that a department clerk ran a scam to help his own people and demanded his suspension. The teachers also said that promises of a meeting with chief minister Bhagwat mann have not been fulfilled and no real action has been taken so far. Read the article to know more details.
Why the ETT Teachers Protest Started
The ETT Teachers protest began over the claim that the recruitment of 180 teachers was affected by serious mistakes and unfair actions inside the department. One protester said the teacher wanted the suspension of the education department clerk who allegedly planned a large scam to adjust his own people. The teachers said they are only asking for their rights and fair treatment. They also claimed that both the education minister and the finance minister said they did not have the power to suspend the clerk. According to the protesters they were told that a meeting with the chief minister would be arranged but that promise has still not been kept. The teachers said the Punjab government is only making excuses while their demand for justice remains ignored.
Teachers Allege Government Protection and Police Action
Another protester said the teachers were first recruited in 2016 but were later removed because of alleged flaws in the recruitment process. They were brought back after a court order which gave them relief. The protesters now say that the Aam Aadmi Parti government protected the same clerk instead of taking action. They also referred to a report which reportedly said that the problem happened because of the clerk’s mistake and that the 180 ETT teachers were not at fault. Even after several meetings in the past week the teachers said they have received no justice. Some protesters also alleged that teachers who came to Chandigarh were faced with assault and violence. The ETT teacher protest later ended with Punjab Police stepping in and removing the protesters from outside the finance minister's residence.
