Open AI and ChatGPT: The Company that Started it All

OpenAI is the company behind ChatGPT, the AI that put this entire conversation on the global map.

It was founded in 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and a few others as a non-profit. The goal was simple: build AI for all of humanity. But over time, it moved toward making money, and the changes have been massive.

According to Forbes, OpenAI is valued at $730 billion, but Altman holds no equity in the company at all. His net worth is estimated at $3.3 billion as of April 2026, and his wealth comes entirely from his work as a venture capitalist, with investments in companies.

On market share, ChatGPT holds 76.92% of global generative AI market share as per Stat Counter

Which AI Is Owned by the Richest Person on the Planet?

Grok is the AI chatbot that is built by xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company. xAI was founded by Musk in March 2023, and Grok launched in November 2023 as a direct competitor to ChatGPT.

It is deeply embedded into X, formerly known as Twitter, which Musk also owns, giving it a natural distribution advantage that no other AI company has.

Elon Musk is currently the wealthiest person in the world, with Forbes estimating his net worth at around $794.4 billion as of May 2026. A large chunk of that now comes from the SpaceX and xAI merger completed in early 2026.

Which AI Is Backed by One of the Largest Companies in the World?

Gemini is Google's AI assistant and it is 100% owned by Alphabet, Google's parent company. Google DeepMind, the lab that builds Gemini, is a subsidiary of Alphabet. It was originally founded in the UK in 2010, acquired by Google in 2014, and merged with Google Brain to become Google DeepMind in April 2023.

The man running it all is Sundar Pichai, CEO of both Google and Alphabet. His net worth is estimated at approximately $1.8 billion in 2026. According to Forbes, Pichai currently holds approximately 0.02% of Alphabet's total shares, and his wealth is largely tied to Alphabet stock accumulated through executive compensation over the years.

Gemini's market growth is arguably the biggest story of the past year. As per the Stat Counter data, it has a market share of 8.99%.

Which AI Is Backed by One of the Largest Companies in the World?

Anthropic is the company behind Claude, and it might just be the most interesting ownership story of the bunch.

Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI members including siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei. They left because they believed AI safety was not being taken seriously enough. Dario Amodei, the CEO, has a net worth of approximately $7 billion according to Forbes, which is more than double that of OpenAI's Sam Altman.

The ownership angle here is fascinating. Google recently committed $40 billion to Anthropic, even though Gemini directly competes with Claude. Amazon is also a massive backer. So Google is literally funding its own competitor.

Anthropic's currently sits at $380 billion dollars. The official website mentions: “We have raised $30 billion in Series G funding led by GIC and Coatue, valuing Anthropic at $380 billion post-money.”

On market share, Claude is small in raw web traffic at around 2%, but Claude is winning enterprise AI deals.

The AI race is no longer just a technology competition. It is a power game between some of the richest and most influential people on the planet.
