Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the First Indian Prime Minister to address the Parliament of Indonesia. He attended the joint session of Indonesian lawmakers in Jakarta. PM Modi spoke in the house and outlined a transformative Ganga-Mahakam Vision that is designed to reshape the geopolitical and economic landscapes of the Indo-Pacific region. 

The PM Modi’s historic visit to the three nations, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, aimed at India’s Act East Policy.  He received a grad welcome and was conferred with Indonesia's highest civilian honor the Bintang Adipurna by President Prabowo Subianto.

India and Indonesia signed a major strategic defense supply to equip Indonesian forces with advanced Indian BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra (air-to-air) Missiles. 

The Ganga- Mahakam Vision

PM Modi launched a new Ganga-Mahakam framework. It is based on the framework for bilateral engagement to share the heritage of India’s sacred Ganges and Indonesia’s Mahakam River, prioritizing joint maritime security and the prosperity of both countries.

A Mantra of Reform

While addressing the Indonesian Parliament highlighted the  Indian diaspora and lawmakers. PM Modi declared India’s growth is driven by the mantra of ‘Reforms, Perform and Transform’ making its self-reliance a multiplying force for the entire ASEAN region. 

UPI-ORIS Digital Integration

Financial connectivity reached new heights as both leaders reviewed progress on fully integrating India’s UPI with Indonesia’s ORIS digital payment systems. 

Industrial Steel Joint Venture

The Steel Authority of India(SAIL) signed a joint venture with Indonesia’s PT Krakatau Steel to set up a state-of-the-art stainless steel manufacturing facility to enhance the economic cooperation between the two countries. 

PM Modi honored India's past support for Indonesia's independence at the United Nations(UN) citing the legacy of the 1955 Bandung Conference, Jawaharlal Nehru and the legendary rescue pilot Biju Patnaik. 

A Vision for  Indo-Pacific Region

During PM Modi's address to the Indonesian Parliament, he focused on regional sovereignty that resonated with ASEAN countries amidst rising geopolitical uncertainties. He also advocated a strong vision for the freedom of navigation and an inclusive rule based Indo-Pacific region

He noted that when the 1.4 billion people of India and the 290 million citizens of Indonesia can tadvance their own economies together and build global trust in democratic values.

PM Modi highlighted both nations are also shared  ancient civilzational share ties such epics Ramayana and Mahabharata tracing back to the legacy of the 1955 Bandung Conference.

The restoration of Prambanan temple showcases India and Indonesia's enduring link. They exchanged a Letter of Intent to launch a joint conservation and restoration project at the UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple Compounds in Yogyakarta.

This is the voice of the Global South. This meeting repositions India and Indonesia as anchors of the Global South by strengthening parliamentary friendship groups and executing infrastructure deals without predatory debt frameworks both nations are modeling a balanced and collaborative approach to regional leadership.
