OSM Evaluation: The Central Board of Secondary Education received harsh criticism over its new On-Screen Marking (OSM) method for class 12 students after pass percentages dropped and there were mistakes made while scanning the answers. But ICAI, UPSC, and state school boards have used OSM technology very effectively for many years to avoid totaling mistakes.

OSM Faulty? CBSE is not The First in India to Try This, Even ICAI, UPSC and Major Universities Use OSM Effectively - Here’s How

Key Points

  • CBSE introduced OSM for Class 12 board exams, aiming for accuracy.
  • OSM seeks to reduce human errors in totaling and prevent omitted pages.
  • UPSC, ICAI, and state boards also use OSM for various exams.

OSM Evaluation: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come under the spotlight since the introduction of the new On-Screen Marking (OSM) electronic evaluation process that was used for the board examinations for Class 12. With pass percentages falling drastically (88.39% to 85.20%) and several reports floating about the internet suggesting that the scanned sheets had unclear handwriting and that some were not checked properly and candidate roll numbers were incorrect, people began to wonder about the effectiveness of the whole digital evaluation process.

But labeling it as ineffective would be extremely misleading. For one, CBSE is not the first prestigious organization to go for a digital system of script evaluation. The list of organizations that use OSM technology includes premier organizations like the ICAI, UPSC, and several technical universities.

OSM Evaluation: How Other Boards Use OSM?

OSM’s basic concept is right on target since it seeks to do away with human errors in totaling the scores and prevent examiners from omitting entire pages while evaluating students’ tests.

  1. Board Examinations (School Level)
  • CBSE Class 12 Board Examinations: The Central Board of Secondary Education implemented the OSM system for all Class 12 answer sheets to ensure accuracy, standardized evaluations, and regional cross-comparisons without any chances of manual error calculations. (Class 10 examinations follow conventional procedures.)
  • State School Boards: Progressive state school boards adopt the OSM process for their Class 10 and Class 12 descriptive answer papers. They include Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan, TNDGE Tamil Nadu School Board, and the Telangana/Andhra Pradesh State School Boards for certain high-turnout courses.
  1. National & State Civil Services Exams
  • UPSC (Civil Services): The UPSC utilizes secure OSM portals to score the highly descriptive essays and optional subjects required for selection into the IAS and IPS.
  • PSC (Public Services of States): PSC organizations such as MPSC (Maharashtra), KPSC (Karnataka), TNPSC (Tamil Nadu), and GPSC (Gujarat) employ OSM for marking the Gazetted Probationers Mains examinations.
  1. Professional & Chartered Licensing Exams
  • ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India): The descriptive answer papers of CA Intermediate and CA Final exams are scanned through OSM to be marked strictly according to the central marking system.
  • ICSI (Institute of Company Secretaries of India) & ICMAI: Used while evaluating the exams of executives/professionals.
