West Bengal Honours Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on His Birth Anniversary, Plans 125-Foot Statue

West Bengal has honoured Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on July 6th with a state holiday honoring , a prominent Indian nationalist. Additionally, the government plans to erect a 125-foot statue in Kolkata

To celebrate the birth of a famous activist and scholar who played an important role in the development of both Bengal and India, West Bengal has declared July 6th to be a state holiday in honour of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also announced that a statue of Dr. Mukherjee measuring 125 feet will be erected as well. 

He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, served as Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, and was one of the most prominent leaders in the fight for India's independence. Once finished, this statue will serve as a major landmark and serve as a lasting tribute to Dr. Mukherjee's life and his contributions to society as a whole, throughout India.

West Bengal Honours Shyama Prasad Mukherjee

West Bengal has scheduled a holiday for all government offices, all government departments and all schools and colleges in accordance with an official birth-anniversary holiday of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Administrative divisions of the state will be closed, as will be all schools and colleges, in accordance with official state declarations.

All essential services such as health care, emergency services, public transport, and other essential utility services are, in general, expected to continue to be open to the public so that there is no impact to public convenience. All residents are encouraged to verify specific closure dates and specific service hours with their appropriate local authorities and appropriate institutions.

West Bengal Plans 125-Foot Statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee

A 125-foot-tall statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee is to be erected in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, in respect of Mukherjee’s 125th birth anniversary and as a way to honor Mukherjee’s role as a politician, educationalist, and integrative force in Indian society. In addition to the statue, a library and a memorial dedicated to Mukherjee will also be created. 

This statue will represent one of the largest statues of Mukherjee in India and will serve as a significant landmark in Kolkata. The objective of this endeavor is showcase Mukherjee’s legacy and to educate present and future generations about Mukherjee’s impact on the development of contemporary India. The project represents an effort by the state to acknowledge important historical people and their contributions to society.

What was Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s Contribution?

An Indian Nationalist leader and Educationalist, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee is remembered as a top leader for this country. Also, he served as Vice Chancellor for the University of Calcutta at a young age before becoming the first Minister of Industries and Supply for independent India. One of his primary goals was to promote nationalism and unity throughout India while opposing Article 370, the provision providing special status to Jammu & Kashmir. 

In 1951 he started the Bharatiya Jana Sangh which eventually became the basis for the current day Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was instrumental in promoting industrialization, educational reform, integrating princely States into India, and having the groundwork laid down for Indian politics today, and for creating a strong self-sufficient Nation.
