FAIMA Flags FMG Internship Delays, Warns of Impact on NEET PG 2027 Aspirants

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has written to Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and the National Medical Commission (NMC) expressing concern over prolonged delays in internship allotments of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) and warning that the issue could impact the eligibility and preparation timelines of FMGs seeking to take the NEET PG 2027 exam. According to FAIMA, as many as 346 FMGs in Delhi who cleared the FMGE December 2025 session are waiting for nearly five months to get internship assignments, despite becoming eligible for the compulsory Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI).

FAIMA Highlights Key Concerns

In its letter dated June 22, FAIMA said that several medical colleges and non-teaching hospitals are unwilling to provide internship seats to FMGs, owing to budgetary constraints and ambiguity over stipend payments. The association also pointed out delays in document verification and internship seat allotment processes. The doctors’ body said that internship delays are not confined to Delhi, and have been reported in states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Odisha and Bihar. In some instances, FMGs reportedly face delays ranging from several months to as long as two years before getting internship placements.

How Internship Delays Could Affect NEET PG 2027

FAIMA warned that the prolonged wait for internship allotment could have serious academic and professional consequences for FMGs. The association noted that delayed internships may:

  • Reduce the time available for NEET PG 2027 preparation.
  • Affect eligibility timelines for postgraduate entrance examinations.
  • Delay the start of professional medical careers.
  • Increase financial and mental stress on graduates and their families.
  • Lead to underutilisation of qualified medical professionals despite healthcare workforce shortages.

FAIMA's Demands to the Centre and NMC

To address the issue, FAIMA has urged the Health Ministry and NMC to take immediate corrective measures, including:

  • Immediate internship allotment for the 346 FMGs awaiting placements in Delhi.
  • Faster document verification and seat allocation processes.
  • A fixed national timeline for internship allotment across all states.
  • Resolution of stipend-related disputes and implementation of equal stipend provisions for FMGs.
  • Increasing FMG internship seat capacity in medical colleges from the existing 7.5% limit to 20–30%.
  • Creating a sustainable framework to accommodate future FMG batches.

FMGE June 2026 Batch May Face Similar Challenges

FAIMA has also cautioned that with the FMGE June 2026 examination approaching, another batch of successful FMGs will soon become eligible for internships. Without timely intervention, the current backlog could worsen, further affecting postgraduate medical aspirants and healthcare services.
The internship allotment crisis has emerged as a major concern for Foreign Medical Graduates across India. As FAIMA seeks urgent intervention from the Centre and NMC, thousands of FMGs await clarity on internship placements that are crucial for their medical careers and future eligibility for competitive examinations such as NEET PG 2027.
