What are the global trends in the Biggest Arms Importer and Exporter in the World?

1. Europe’s Massive Rearmament

Europe is now the world’s fastest-growing region for arms imports. Purchases by European states more than tripled (+210%) compared to the previous five-year period. This trend is driven by a perceived growing threat in the region, leading countries like Poland and the UK to sign massive contracts for tanks, missiles, and jets.

2. Which countries are the largest exporters of Arms in the World?

The United States is at the top and the largest largest exporters of Arms in the world for the last year. It shares the largest exporters of Arms in the world, around 42 per cent of the worldwide share of all international arms transfers in 2021–25, which is a rise from 36 per cent in 2016–2020 to 42 per cent in 2021–2025.

Other than the United States, France and Russia stand in 2nd and 3rd position in the largest exporters of Arms in the World

  • USA: Remains the world’s largest exporter, capturing 42% of the global market. U.S. exports to Europe specifically soared by 217%.

  • France: Solidified its position as the number two exporter with a 9.8% share. India is France's largest client, buying nearly a quarter of its exports.

  • Russia: For the first time, Russia has dropped to third place. Its exports fell by 64% in volume as it uses more equipment for its own military and faces fewer international buyers.

3. Decreasing Imports in Asia and the Middle East

While these regions still buy a lot of equipment, their overall import volumes have actually dropped.

  • Middle East: Imports fell by 13%, though Saudi Arabia and Qatar remain among the top buyers globally.

  • Asia and Oceania: Imports decreased by 20%. A major reason for this is China, whose imports have more than halved because it is now successfully manufacturing most of its own high-tech military hardware.

Fast Facts

  • Largest Importer Region: Europe (now receives 33% of all global imports).

  • Largest Exporter: The United States (sells to 99 different countries).

  • Fastest Growing Exporter: Italy saw one of the biggest jumps, with exports rising by 157%.

  • India's Strategy: India remains a top buyer but is increasingly shifting its purchases away from Russia and toward France, the US, and Israel.

The 2026 data show a world in a state of rapid re-equipment. While Ukraine is the top individual importer today, the broader story is the trebling of demand in Europe and the growing dominance of U.S. and French technology in the global market.
