State-wise Summer Vacation 2026: Due to the extreme rise in temperature all over the nation, state governments and the education departments have consciously amended their academic calendars, shielding school-going children from the ill effects of the extreme heat waves. This timely administrative amendment has been witnessed in terms of changes in the traditional schedule pattern, whereby while some states have already started the scheduled vacation period for the year, others had no other option but to change the vacation schedule due to the meteorological warnings and orange alert given by the meteorology department.

To address this climate crisis without compromising the academic curriculum, the administration in the region has come up with a more flexible, multi-level strategy. For places that experience the harshest heat waves, such as those in northern, central, and eastern India, schools are shut down and operations moved online. 

Other boards, meanwhile, allow schools to operate only during morning hours to ensure that children can go back home before ground temperature peaks. This schedule remains flexible, with local administrators empowered to modify the reopening date depending on the levels of regional humidity indexes.

Summer Vacation 2026: Region Wise

Following is the revised state-wise breakup of the summer vacations and the dates when schools would be re-opened.

North India Region

• Delhi (NCT): As per the official notice by the Directorate of Education (DoE), summer vacations will commence from May 11 till June 30. In view of the heatwave situation prevailing in the state, primary classes were closed early in May. All schools will re-open on July 1, 2026.

• UP (Uttar Pradesh): In UP, schools will remain closed throughout a period of 41 days, commencing from May 20 till June 30. Schools will resume their normal activities from July 1, 2026.

• Punjab/Haryana: Both Punjab and Haryana state governments have announced that summer holidays will commence from June 1 till June 30, 2026.

East And Central India Region

• Bihar: As a result of heatwave issues, school closures have been announced from May 18 till June 8. Classes will resume regularly from June 9, 2026.

• Jharkhand: For candidate safety reasons, classroom sessions have been suspended from May 22 till June 15. Sessions will resume from June 16, 2026.

• Madhya Pradesh: Summer vacation for the children started on May 1 and ended on June 15. However, teachers will report back early in preparation for the students' return date, which is June 16, 2026.

West And South Indian Regions

• Maharashtra: The board for primary and secondary education has announced summer vacation for their students starting from May 2 until June 14. Students from the Konkan regions will go back to school on June 15 while the rest from Vidarbha region schools will come back to school only by June 30, 2026.

• Karnataka: The department of school education and literacy has finished their academic blocks and have observed holiday from April 11 until May 28. All schools in Karnataka have resumed operations for the new academic year today May 29, 2026.

• Tamil Nadu: As a result of some local climatic changes, all schools including government, aided and matriculation schools will re-open from June 10, 2026.
