Compared to last year, the number of applicants increased by 15%. This means the GATE Result 2026 ranks might be slightly more competitive for the same raw marks compared to GATE 2025.

For those not getting into IITs, the CCMT (Centralised Counselling for M.Tech) will handle admissions for NITs and IIITs based on the GATE 2026 results. Candidates must keep the category certificates ready.

The marks and your GATE Score are different. While marks are out of 100, the score is out of 1000. It is the Score that IITs use for the COAP 2026 admission process.

The qualifying cutoff for SC/ST/PwD is typically two-thirds of the General category cutoff. For OBC-NCL/EWS, it is 90% of the General cutoff. Aspirants can expect the General cutoff for Mechanical to be around 32.5.

After the final key is out, candidates can save their response sheet. Cross-verify their answers with the final keys. This is the only way to check your exact raw marks before the official result is declared on Thursday.

If the objections raised by candidates to the provisional key are accepted in the final answer, then IIT Guwahati will initiate a refund of the INR 500 fee per question. These refunds are processed automatically to the bank account used during the objection phase.

There is a difference between the qualifying marks (to be released on March 19) and the admission cut-offs for IITs. Qualifying marks allow you candidates to apply, but the admission cut-offs for branches like VLSI or Data Science are significantly higher.

The final key provides raw marks. The Scorecard (Mar 27) will provide the GATE score (out of 1000), which is a relative measure used by IITs for counselling.

The result on March 19 is expected to be live by 1:30 PM IST, following the trend of the last three years. The final answer key will be permanently available in the "Archives" section thereafter.

Candidates must note that the final answer key is final. No further emails, challenges, or requests for corrections will be entertained by the organising institute. This document reflects the consensus of subject matter experts after reviewing over 15,000 provisional objections.

The AIR is calculated based on the raw marks secured from the final answer key. If two candidates have the same score, the tie-breaking rule applies: candidates with higher marks in technical sections are ranked higher, followed by age seniority.

After the scores are finalised using this key, the GATE 2026 Scorecard will remain valid for three years (until March 2029) for M.Tech admissions in India and selected foreign universities like NUS Singapore.

Candidates should keep their Response Sheet (released on Feb 22) open alongside the Final Key PDF. This ensures that candidates can identify exactly where their score changed after the provisional challenge phase.

Unlike MCQs, Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) have no negative marking. However, there is no partial marking. Candidates must select all correct options to secure marks.

Aspirants can use the following standard formula to get their raw score before the official result:

Total Score = (Total 1-mark correct) + (Total 2-mark correct) – (Negative marks for 1-mark & 2-mark MCQs).

For the Computer Science paper, experts suggest that 1–2 questions in the NAT section were heavily contested. The final key will confirm if these answers have been shifted or if full marks will be awarded.

The GATE 2026 final key determines the raw marks, which are then used in the normalisation process for multi-session papers like Computer Science (CS) and Civil Engineering (CE).

Subject committees at IIT Guwahati have completed the review of challenges filed between February 25 and 28. If the objection raised by candidates is sustained, the INR 500 challenge fee will be refunded to their original payment source within 15–20 working days.

If a question is found technically incorrect by the subject experts, it will be marked as "Dropped" or "Marks to All" (MTA).

MTA Rule: Full marks will be awarded to all candidates who appeared for that paper, regardless of whether they attempted the specific question.
