According to the latest reports, two individuals have been arrested by the Nagpur Police in Maharashtra for allegedly circulating an HSC chemistry question paper in a WhatsApp group shortly before the exam. According to reports, the Maharashtra state board has clarified that the incident does not amount to a paper leak, confirming that no re-examination will be held.

According to police, one of the accused is linked to a small tuition centre, while the other was a member of the WhatsApp group where the question paper was shared. Sadar police Inspector stated that arrests have been made at around 3 AM, and the investigation is underway. He also added that the identities of the accused cannot be revealed until the main source of the circulation is identified. The tuition centre in question has about 10 to 12 students. The students are yet to be questioned as the exams are currently ongoing.

The alleged paper leak was discovered on February 18, 2026, in Nagours Mankapur after an exam invigilator at St. Ursulas College became suspicious of a student who had spent nearly 20 minutes in the washroom during the chemistry examination scheduled at 11 AM. After questioning, the student was found carrying a mobile phone, which is not permitted inside the exam hall. Further probing found an image of the Chemistry question paper in a WhatsApp group between 10:37 AM and 10:40 AM, just minutes before the examination began. Authorities also found that the Physics paper conducted on February 16 was also shared on the same WhatsApp group earlier the same day. 12 students were reportedly members of the group, and officials have stated that although the student had seen the message notification during the initial checking, she did not open it and was unable to use the phone during the exam, which means she gained no advantage from the question paper circulated.

Another student from the same group was later question and the phone confirmed that she is also a member of the same group. Board officials have confirmed that the HSC exam will proceed as per schedule, as the circulation was limited to a single WhatsApp group involving only a few students.

Similar incidents in the past were reported, based on which the board also revised the exam procedures. Sealed question paper bundles were opened 10 minutes before the exam, allowing students to read through the question paper. This was suspected to create an opportunity for papers to be photographed and shared. In response to this, question papers are now distributed at the scheduled time with students given additional 10 minutes at the end of the exam.
