Suvendu Adhikari has officially been sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal, leading the state's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state. The ceremony is administered by Governor R.N. Raviat the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J.P. Nadda and several senior NDA leaders attended the ceremony. Alongside him five senior BJP leaders were inducted into the initial cabinet, representing a strategic mix of regional and social demographics. 

Historic Day for BJP in West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari officially became the Chief Minister of West Bengal after taking oath on Saturday, May, 9th 2026 in in Kolkata on the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore (Tagore Jayanti), signaling a focus on Bengali cultural identity. The swearing-in ceremony was organised at Brigade Parade Ground amid massive celebrations by BJP supporters across the state. The BJP’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections ended decades of dominance by regional parties like TMC in Bengal politics. Party workers described the moment as the beginning of a “new era” for the state.

PM Modi and Top NDA Leaders Attend Ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP national president J.P. Nadda attended the oath-taking ceremony along with several chief ministers and NDA leaders. Large crowds gathered at the venue as supporters waved BJP flags and celebrated the party’s historic win. Tight security arrangements were made across Kolkata due to the presence of several high-profile political leaders.

Several BJP Leaders Sworn In as Cabinet Ministers

Along with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, multiple BJP MLAs also took oath as cabinet ministers. Although the full cabinet is expected to be expanded in phases, five key leaders were sworn in today to form the core of the new administration. Leaders belong from different regions including North Bengal, South Bengal and Junglemahal to ensure balanced regional representation.
