George Kurian: Union Cabinet Minister and Kerala BJP Leader Resigns

The resignation of BJP Union Minister George Kurian in Kerala is being seen as a big change for the federal government because it is an indicator of the BJP's expansion plan for southern India, namely Kerala, where it will face a very strong competition.

George Kurian’s Role as Union Minister

As Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, George Kurian was tasked with supporting the government schemes designed to help minorities throughout India, overseeing and supporting their implementation, monitoring their success through various government programs and initiatives like helping minorities with education, skills development, livelihoods and socially empowering them including making sure that beneficiaries of these centrally funded governmental programs accessed them in an adequate way. 

He worked with the Bureau of Minority Affairs, different departments in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the state governments to help coordinate policy and enhance delivery and execution of programs so that they reached the people they were meant to help. He also served as a representative of the government during Parliamentary discussions and reviews regarding issues affecting minorities through public forums.

Being responsible for conducting reviews of current programs to determine where improvements could be made, implementing improvements to programs or delivery of programs that would help successfully implement and deliver programs.

Brief Glance at George Kurian’s Political Career

George Kurian, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala, has been instrumental in developing the party's organisational strength in the region. He started his political career and climbed through the ranks until he became a prominent spokesman and strategist for the BJP in Kerala. 

Throughout the years, he has been viewed as the spokesman for the BJP in media debates and other public arenas through which he promotes the party's policies and positions on both national and regional matters. Kurian also conducts extensive outreach efforts for example, minority engagement and grassroots mobilization and to increase the visibility of the BJP in a highly competitive political climate dominated by other political fronts. 

Ultimately, his leadership roles within the party enabled him to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha ,thereby increasing his influence. Subsequently, he was made the Union Minister for Minority Affairs, representing a significant milestone in his political career.
