All businesses cannot always flourish; it comes with the risk of investment. So, when businesses face financial disruption, the owner gets a hit. It becomes difficult keeping the cash flowing.

The Government of India has launched a helping hand for such owners, An Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0. It was approved on 5 May 2026 and implemented by the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC). The biggest feature this scheme has is that the scheme provides government-backed credit guarantees to Member Lending Institutions (MLIs). This helps them extend additional working capital for all the eligible ones.

The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0 aims solely to improve liquidity, support employment and help businesses maintain uninterrupted operations and supply chains. This covers eligible MSMEs, non-MSMEs and scheduled passenger airlines.

What Does ECLGS 5.0 Do?

-Validity: The scheme will remain operational until 31 March 2027, or until guarantees worth тВ╣2.55 lakh crore are issued, whichever comes earlier. 

-For MSMEs: Eligible MSMEs will receive 100% credit guarantee coverage. 

-For Non-MSMEs: Eligible non-MSME businesses will receive 90% guarantee coverage.

-For Airlines: Eligible scheduled passenger airlines will also receive 90% guarantee coverage.

Who Can Avail ECLGS 5.0? Eligibility Criteria

MSMEs

MSMEs across all sectors can avail the scheme, subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions.

Non-MSME Businesses

Must have existing working capital facilities with MLIs as of 31 March 2026. Loan repayments should not be overdue by more than 60 days.

Non-MSME Excluded Sectors

NBFCs, power, telecom, sugar and ethanol, IT, paper and paper products, educational institutions, beverages except tea and coffee, and tobacco are excluded.

Scheduled Passenger Airlines

Eligible airlines can receive additional credit of up to 100%, subject to a maximum of тВ╣1,500 crore per borrower.

How Much Additional Credit Is Available?

ECLGS 5.0 offers MSMEs and eligible non-MSMEs additional credit of up to 20% of the peak fund-based working capital (PwCWC) outstanding in the fourth quarter of FY 2025тАУ26, up to a maximum of тВ╣100 crore per borrower.

The loans availed through the scheme will, generally, have a five-year period, including a one-year moratorium. In the case of scheduled passenger airlines, the period will be seven years, including a two-year moratorium.

ECLGS 5.0 Latest Update

On 20 August 2026, approximately 6,73,979 guarantees were issued under ECLGS 5.0, totalling a guaranteed Rs. 2,50,024 crore. The figure demonstrates the large scale at which qualifying businesses were provided access to credit support under the scheme.

MSMEs received 97.3% of the guarantees by number and 80.79% of the total guaranteed amount, showing that the largest number of beneficiaries of the scheme were MSMEs.

Jan Samarth Portal is the online interface where eligible borrowers can apply for ECLGS 5.0. The credit support is provided by banks and financial institutions participating as lending institutions through the Jan Samarth Portal. ECLGS 5.0 is designed to promote the credit flow to eligible businesses for their working capital needs when they experience financial stress.

The government said ECLGS 5.0 is aimed at supporting business resilience, generating employment, alleviating liquidity strain and enabling enterprises to keep functioning and their supply chains operational in times of economic uncertainty.
