As of 18 April 2026, key weekly developments making the headlines include the Lok Sabha failing to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aimed to fast-track the implementation of 33% reservation for women in legislatures (introduced by the 106th Constitutional Amendment (2023)) by enabling delimitation based on the 2011 Census. 

The River Basin Management (RBM) Scheme, a central sector initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, has been extended for the 16th Finance Commission period spanning 2026–27 to 2030–31, highlighting India’s renewed focus on integrated and sustainable water resource management at the basin level

Harivansh Narayan Singh was re-elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a third consecutive termHe was elected unopposed for the post. The Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, moved the motion to choose Harivansh as the Deputy Chairman of the Upper House. 

Among other developments are India's first Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, India slipping to sixth spot in the world economy as per IMF, establishment of the first semiconductor fabrication plant within a new Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Dholera, Gujarat, and a 10-day ceasefire agreement was established between Lebanon and Israel.

Current Affairs Terms in News This Week (12-18 April 2026)

1. Thorium-232

Why in news? India's first Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu successfully attained its first criticality on 6th April 2026, marking the beginning of a sustained nuclear chain reaction for the first time. This 500 MWe PFBR marked India’s entrance into the second stage of its three-stage nuclear programme. The PFBR is specifically designed to eventually incorporate Thorium-232 into its blanket. Through transmutation, this will breed Uranium-233, the fuel required to power Stage 3.

What is it?

Thorium-232 is the main isotope of natural thorium (99.98% abundance). It is not directly fissile but is "fertile." When it absorbs a neutron, it converts into Uranium-233, which is a highly efficient fissile fuel for nuclear reactors.

  • Thorium 232 is abundant in the Earth's crust. India holds roughly 25% of the world's known thorium reserves.
  • Thorium-232 must be converted into uranium-233 in breeder reactors. Thorium-232 is key to India's three-stage nuclear program. 

2. IMF

Why in news? India has slipped to the sixth spot among the world's largest economies in 2025, as per the latest World Economic Outlook Report, 2026, released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). While despite trailing behind the United Kingdom (UK), the IMF increased India's real GDP growth forecast to 6.5% for FY27. India's GDP growth in domestic currency terms shows a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.56% from 2021 to 2025. 

What is it?

IMF full form is the International Monetary Fund, which is an international financial institution comprising 191 member countries, headquartered in Washington. IMF is a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN).

Key Points

  • IMF aims to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.
  • Established in July 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference, the IMF came into formal existence in 1945 with 29 member countries. 

3. Article 89(2)

Why in news? Harivansh Narayan Singh was re-elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a historic third consecutive term on 17 April 2026, after the Office of the Deputy Chair of the Rajya Sabha fell vacant after his term ended on 9 April 2026. The journalist-turned-politician was nominated by President Droupadi Murmu. Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha JP Nadda moved the motion to choose Harivansh as the Deputy Chairman of the Upper House.  

What is it?

Article 89(2) of the Indian Constitution mandates that the Rajya Sabha must elect one of its members as Deputy Chairman.

  • Article 89 of the Indian Constitution establishes the offices of the Chairmn and Deputy Chairman of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).
  • The Deputy Chairman presides over the Rajya Sabha's sittings in the absence of the Chairman (who is the Vice-President of India). 

4. Special Economic Zone (SEZ)

Why in news? Indian government, on 16 April 2026, officially notified that India's first Semiconductor Fabrication plant to be set up within a new Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Dholera, Gujarat. A ₹91,000 crore project by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited will be located in a new 66.166-hectare Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Dholera, Gujarat, to support the production of semiconductors along with electronic hardware, software, and IT services, and provide employment to 21,000 persons.

What is it?

Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are a designated duty-free geographical region treated as foreign territory for trade, duties, and tariffs, aimed at boosting exports, investments, and employment. 

Key Points

  • The Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Act, 2005,was enacted on 23 June, 2005, and was effective from 10 February, 2006.
  • SEZs can be developed by the central government, state governments, or private entities (including state industrial development corporations)
  • Major operating SEZs include Mundra SEZ (Gujarat - largest)Kandla SEZ (Gujarat - first in Asia)SEEPZ SEZ (Maharashtra)Noida SEZ (Uttar Pradesh), and GIFT City SEZ (Gujarat).

5. Lebanon

Why in news? A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into force on 16 April 2026, following six weeks of fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese group, Hezbollah. The 2026 Israel-Lebanon ceasefire was brokered by the US President Donald Trump after talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The 10-day ceasefire aims at reaching a peace agreement and disarming Hezbollah. 

What is it?

Lebanon is a sovereign country in the Levant region of West Asia. Beirut is the capital of Lebanon. It is a narrow strip of territory on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. 

Key Points

  • The countries bordering Lebanon include Syria to the north and Israel to the south. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the west. 
  • Lebanon has diverse mountainous terrain and four major physiographic regions: Coastal plain, Lebanon Mountains (Mount Lebanon range), Bekaa Valley, and the Anti-Lebanon and Hermon ranges.
