At ITB Berlin 2026, India outlined its Vision 2047 strategy to build a sustainable, inclusive tourism sector. Emphasizing responsible growth, improved connectivity, heritage conservation and community empowerment, the roadmap aims to increase tourism’s GDP contribution while protecting ecosystems and promoting high-quality, environmentally conscious travel experiences.

India was presenting its sustainable tourism vision at ITB Berlin 2026 and the Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat focused on responsible development as part of Vision 2047.

The focus on this worldwide platform was the strategy of India in terms of inclusive and eco-friendly tourism development.

Where was the ITB Berlin 2026 event Hosted?

The 60th edition of ITB Berlin, which is one of the largest tourism trade fairs globally, was conducted in Berlin, Germany, between March 3-5, 2026.

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat participated in the Summit of the UN Tourism Minister where he highlighted the main theme of India which is the principle of Growth with Responsibility.

He opened the Indian pavilion in Incredible India banner which has various offerings in the Himalayan adventure and the beaches of Kerala and the heritage of Rajasthan.

What is the Vision 2047 Strategy?

Vision 2047 seeks to transform the tourism industry into a core economic sector with a goal of 10 per cent GDP contribution in 2047 out of the 32 trillion economy by 2047.

It is centered on globally competitive, sustainable and community-based destinations with a balance between visitor growth on one hand, and cultural preservation on the other hand and environmental protection.

This is in addition to local economic empowerment and heritage conservation, which presents tourism as a source of resilience and common good.

What were the Key Initiatives?

They are built through government schemes such as Swadesh Darshan, which build thematic tourist circuits and PRASHAD which upgrades pilgrimage sites.

UDAN scheme has enhanced the level of regional air connectivity with an increment of operational airports in the region, which was 74 in 2010 to more than 160 as of today, and Vande Bharat trains to complete seamless circuits.

Recent initiatives involve 50 Destination Challenge to upgrade infrastructure, e- Visa to reforming and MUDRA loans to homestays to create employment and quality tourism.

Improved connectivity favors up-and-coming destinations without undermining the ecosystems. States such as Goa also reflected on this on ITB and they advocated regenerative tourism, which was advantageous to communities and heritage; beyond sustainability. India is encouraging the world to collaborate in eco-tourism, green certifications, and carrying capacity guidelines to make sure that it remains viable in the long run.

Shekhawat reaffirmed that India would work together to have an inclusive growth, as it was based on its magnitude and diversity. This makes India a pioneer in responsible tourism and is able to draw quality tourists who are not interested in high numbers, but quality.

Considering the progress in global trends towards sustainable supply chains, the Indian strategy is consistent with the global agenda, which would be beneficial in increasing arrivals and economic input.
