As per the data shared in the UDISE+ NEP 2020 report, there are 14.67 lakh schools in India with 1.03 crore teachers. 24.72 crore enrolments took place in the 2025-26 academic year from foundational to secondary level. The pupil to teacher ratio stands at 24, which means that, for every 24 students in the country, there is one full-time teacher.

UDISE Report 2025-26: The Unified District Information System For Education Plus (UDISE+) 2025-2026 report with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 structure has been released, entailing distinct features related to student enrollment, teacher profiles and school infrastructure  across government, government aided and private unaided schools. The 2025-26 report highlights student enrolment, dropout rates from Classes 3 to 12 and infrastructure facilities, including the availability of drinking water, toilets, computers, internet, gardens, libraries, and more.

Key Highlights Of The UDISE+ Report With Past Year Comparisons

1. Dropout Rates Fall Over Years

The dropout rates across preparatory (Classes 3 to 5), middle (Classes 6 to 8) and secondary stages (Classes 9 to 12) have fallen over the past three years, showing an improvement in the number of students choosing to continue with their studies. The dropout rates fell from 3.7 per cent in 2023-24 to 1.8 per cent in 2025-26 for the preparatory stage. Similarly, middle and secondary stages have also experienced a reduction in dropout rates- from 5.2 per cent and 10.9 per cent in 2023-24 to 3.6 and 7 per cent in 2025-26, respectively.

2. Pupil To Teacher Ratio (PTR) Sees Slight-To-No Change

The number of pupils per teacher has not seen much of an increase over the years across the four schooling stages under the NEP 2020. The Pupil to Teacher (PTR) for the foundational and secondary level remained the same and was slightly different for the preparatory and middle stages.

3. Infrastructure Facilities Improve Over Years

The infrastructure facilities including basic amenities such as drinking water, toilet and library facilities have improved over the years. In 2023-24, 53.9 and 57.4 per cent of the schools had internet and computer facilities. This number rose to 67.4 and 69.9 per cent in 2025-26, respectively. Now, 99.1 per cent of schools have toilet facilities, as compared to the earlier low 98.6 per cent in 2023-24. Several facilities including hand-wash, library have improved over the years.

4. Government School Enrolment Sees Decline, Private Schools See Rise

The number of students enrolling in government schools has seen a decline of 85.86 lakh over the years - from 12.7 crore in 2023-24 to 11.89 crore in 2025-26. Private schools, in contrast, have seen an increase of more than 86 lakh student enrolments in these years.
