DU To Add 5,500+ Hostel Seats After Satya Niketan Tragedy, 1,000 For Women

Delhi University is set to double its hostel capacity days after a five storey student accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan. The building collapsed on September 6, 2026 and killed seven people. The tragedy has put the spotlight on the shortage of safe student housing near DU campuses. The university now plans to take its total hostel beds to 12,754. Scroll to know more details.
How DU Plans to Reach 12,754 Beds
DU currently has 3,422 hostel seats at the university level. It plans to add 3,922 seats and take the figure to 7,344. Its colleges will add another 1,622 seats to the existing 3,788 and reach a total of 5,410. A new 1,000 seat women’s hostel named Nirbhaya Residential Accommodation is a major project under this plan. It will sharply increase dedicated hostel accommodation for women students. A 1,450 seat Institute of Eminence hostel at the Dhaka Complex is nearing completion. A 1,050 seat studio apartment complex is under construction. Several other hostel projects are underway and more are expected soon. The university said its expansion over the past four to five years will more than double overall capacity. It also plans to submit several additional hostel projects to the government.
Why Students depend on Private PGs
DU has more than 2.5 lakh students. Its existing hostel capacity is estimated at around 9,000 beds. This leaves a large number of students dependent on private accommodation. Satya Niketan lies close to the South Campus and the collapsed building housed a private PG used largely by students. At least 12 people were rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building. Students from outside Delhi depend heavily on such private PGs because Sri Ventakeshwar College and Motilal Nehru College and Aryabhatta College and Ram Lal Anand College. Mukherjee Nagar and Hudson Lane serve the North Campus in the same way.
The Delhi High Court has also stepped in. It issued notice to the centre and the Delhi government and DU on a PIL seeking a time bound hostel policy and hostel accommodation across DU colleges. The matter will be heard on September 25, 2026 with another plea seeking regulation of PG and hostel facilities in Delhi. DU has asked principles to review existing residential facilities and speed up construction of hostels already under. Colleges must assess available space and government schemes and identify fresh options for new hostels.
