On 17 May 2026, thousands of aspirants of the Uttar Pradesh 69,000 assistant teacher recruitment staged a very visible protest in Lucknow hours before the Supreme Court hearing in the case.

A number of candidates, including reserved category candidates, flocked towards the residence of Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh demanding that the state government actively pursue their case in the apex court.

What is the Reason Behind the Protest?

The candidates have complained of serious irregularities in the recruitment of 69,000 teachers, particularly in the implementation of reservation norms.

They allege that the OBC quota was being offered only approximately 3.86% when it was supposed to be 27% as per Basic Education Rules, 1981, of the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the quota of SC was approximately 16.2% when it was supposed to be 21% as per the Reservation Rules, 1994 of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

The part of the merit list was earlier cancelled by Allahabad High Court and the government was also told to frame a new selection list, but the court's directions have not been followed by the candidates.

What Happened in the Protest?

During the most recent protest, many candidates crawled or walked on hot roads during the summer to reach the minister's house and demanded justice saying that it was a symbolic act of ‘sacrifice'.

The demonstration was spearheaded primarily by reserved category aspirants who have complained that their due share of 69,000 posts were diluted by one and contended that the Supreme Court proceedings are continually adjourned due to the absence of proper representation by the legal team of the State government.

It also reminds of the need to review the percentage of reservations, merit-lists and court verdicts before and after the major exams and to join or follow official applicants associations which follow these cases.
