NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak Scandal: A Timeline from Cancellation to CBI Investigations and Institutional Fallout

The NEET-UG 2026 exam has faced a major crisis. Nine days after over 23 lakh students took the exam on May 3 2026 the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled it due to a paper leak. The paper leak case is now with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI is making arrests in many states.

On May 3 2026 the NTA conducted the NEET-UG 2026 exam in 551 cities and 14 international centers. A record 96.92% of students took the exam. The NTA said the exam went smoothly with anti-cheating measures in place. However coaching centers released answer keys and students noticed a digital question bank with 410 questions circulating on WhatsApp and Telegram before the exam.

The NTA received a whistle-blower alert on May 7 about matching questions on messaging platforms. The NTA escalated the issue to law enforcement agencies.
The Rajasthan Police launched a crackdown. Found evidence of a handwritten PDF of questions on the phones of some individuals in Sikar and Jaipur as early as May 1 and May 2. Investigators found that 135 questions in the circulated question bank matched the exam paper exactly.

The NTA cancelled the exam. Announced a re-exam on June 21 2026. The CBI registered a case. Started investigating. The CBI found that a primary agent, Dinesh Biwal scanned digital copies of the final draft paper and distributed them to "safe houses" where students were provided answers for up to ₹30 lakhs. The CBI is also investigating infiltration within the translation and printing matrix.

Multiple petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court demanding an overhaul of the NTA. The petitions argue that the NTA has failed to safeguard security paper-and-pen examinations. The petitioners are seeking the dissolution of the NTA or its replacement with a statutory evaluation authority. As millions of aspirants prepare for the re-exam on June 21 the focus is on the CBI to deliver answers on how the NEET-UG 2026 exam was breached. The CBI needs to find out who was behind the paper leak and take action against them. The students are waiting for the re-exam. Want to make sure that the exam is fair and secure.

The NEET-UG 2026 paper leak scandal has raised questions about the security of exams which are taking place in India. The CBI investigation will hopefully provide some answers. The students, parents and the public are eagerly waiting for the outcome.

The NEET-UG 2026 exam is a step for medical aspirants and it needs to be fair and secure. The authorities need to take all measures to ensure that. The CBI investigation is a step in the direction. Moving Forward it has been addressed that the NEET Exam will be now CBT based.

Recurring large-scale paper leak controversies following the 2024 NEET case have moved the matter into the judicial system now, with several PILs filed before the Supreme Court of India.
The petitioners are demanding to dissolve the NTA as an organisation due to its failure to protect high-level paper-and-pen exams. In the petitions, there is a demand for either the total closure of NTA or creation of a new independent statutory evaluation body.

The petitioners are demanding that the re-test of June 21st be held through a highly secure Computer Based Test (CBT), using AI-assisted monitoring systems and biometric cross-verifications, as recommended originally by K. Radhakrishnan committee.
With lakhs of candidates again revising their medical studies for the surprise June 21 test, many students' hopes are on CBI to find out the best solution to stop this scandal.
