Securing admission to undergraduate programs abroad after Class 12 relies heavily on academic performance, though requirements fluctuate significantly by destination and university tier. While mid-tier global institutions generally accept Indian students with an aggregate score of 60% to 75%, premier elite universities routinely demand 85% or higher.

The minimum percentage criteria for studying abroad after class 12th can be different for different countries, universities and courses. While most institutions will take students with 60-70% in class 12, the top and competitive ones expect more than 80% in class 12.

The Indian students are required to keep in mind that these are general guidelines and no rule is set in stone and every college has a different cut-off.

What is the General Percentage Range to Study Abroad?

This is the average rate of 60-70% for the Indian students in many undergraduate programs abroad. In other countries, like the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and some European countries universities will accept students in this range if they fulfill other requirements.

University (80-90% international or equivalent) may be required for higher‑ranking universities or for selective courses, like engineering, medicine, business, and computer science.

What are the Country‑Specific Requirements?

In the USA and UK, universities look at the overall profile so 60-70% can be fine for many programs, particularly those that are complemented by good test scores and extracurriculars. But at the top ranked schools, that is a standard of 80% or higher.

Many universities have a minimum requirement of 65-75% for Indian students in both Canada and Australia, with some colleges and pathway programs having a lower percentage requirement through a foundation or diploma pathway.

In Germany, the Netherlands and France some public universities ask for preparatory courses for non‑EU applicants and may require 70–80% or equivalent.

Other Admission Requirements

The percentage is not the only factor. Most countries have an English language requirement (IELTS, TOEFL scores). Some competitive courses might also require SAT, ACT or subject tests.

Portfolios and entrance exams may be required for some programs, particularly those in design, arts and architecture. If percentages are on the edge, a solid letter of recommendation and a clear purpose statement can help, as can relevant extracurriculars or work experience.
