Languages are admired for many reasons, each has its own distinct characteristics that make them stand out for various reasons, such as being simple or complex, having a wide range of vocabulary, having a beautiful sound when spoken, having text that looks artistically appealing, etc.

Some languages became well-known to us because of their significance in history and others gained a reputation due to the use of the language in art or literature. Many poets have written poetry in many different languages, but some poets have described certain languages as being the most beautiful and emotionally intense, therefore they refer to these particular languages as "the language of poetry."

Urdu has often been called the "language of poetry." It is known for its gentle sound, lovely articulation and expressive use of vocabulary. The tradition of Urdu Poetry is deep, long standing and rich in culture; influencing people through many different cultures in the world. Poetic forms such as ghazal, nazm and qawwali have emerged with great success in the Urdu literary tradition. 

Great poets such as Mirza Ghalib, Alama Iqbal and Faiz Ahmad Faiz were able to use Urdu poetry to express various feelings including love, philosophy, turmoil, grief and spirituality. The combination of Persian and Arabic influence has given this language great artistic value. Because of its beauty and emotional depth, Urdu is revered within the world of literature and has become an integral part of poetry.

Why is Urdu Called the Language of Poetry?

Urdu has an incredibly beautiful and graceful sound that makes it very enjoyable to listen to. The words flow easily off the tongue and create natural rhythms that are extremely well-suited to being used in poetry. Poets use the sweetness of Urdu in their writing to create emotionally captivating poems that move their listeners and readers deeply.

2. Extensive Poetic Legacy

Urdu literature's extensive legacy includes centuries' worth of poetry that have had many celebrated poets and literary works. Well-known forms of Urdu poetry include the ghazal and nazm. Poets such as Mir Taqi Mir, and Mirza Ghalib helped establish Urdu as one of the greatest poetic languages in the world.

The rich vocabulary and meaningful language of Urdu allow poets to evoke very powerful emotion in their readers, creating strong emotional connections with them. Thus, every poem written in Urdu touches the hearts of individuals across the globe.

The Influence of Arabic and Persian

Urdu has many influences from Persian and Arabic; those languages are essential to how Urdu gained new vocabulary, forms of literature and styles of writing. Because of those influences, and the sophistication, elegance, and beauty of them, Urdu obtained an elevated quality that was most suitable for the production of creative or poetic works that evoke emotional responses and admiration through generations!

The Role of Mushaira

Another way to promote Urdu poetry was through Mushaira events or gatherings where po-ets would recite their poetry to audiences who valued either the beauty of literature or a poetic representation of an individual's feelings. 

The Mushaira events served to create widespread popularity amongst everyday people with the use of Urdu poetry as they contributed toward establishing Urdu as the language of poetry and the arts!
