Indian swimmer Vedaant Madhavan, son of actor R Madhavan, is preparing for his Asian Games debut in Aichi-Nagoya. Stepping away from his distance specialty, the 21-year-old athlete has overhauled his daily training regimen to target the 200m freestyle and relay events.

Indian swimming sensation Vedaant Madhavan who is also the 21 year old son of actor R Madhavan has joined the national squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya Japan. Vedaant is mainly known for long distance events but he is now focusing on the 200m freestyle and relay races for the upcoming Asian Games. 

"I'm not looking to be in the spotlight. I'm just looking to do good for myself and my country as a swimmer,” he spoke to the Press Trust of India (PTI) and confirmed that he wanted his results in the pool to speak for themselves. 

What is Vedaant Madhavan's Workout Routine for Asian Games 2026?

Switching from long distance swimming to the 200m event for Asian Games 2026 involves shifting from endurance to speed. And Vedaant over the past few months has adjusted his daily workouts to build more stamina in the water.

The current 200m freestyle swimming training plan of young Madhavan’s focuses on three specific physical areas:

  1. Gym Exercises: Lifting weights to build upper body power for faster arm pulls.

  2. Leg Kick Drills: Working on leg strength to keep up a strong and fast kick throughout the race.

  3. Ankle Exercises: Improving ankle movement to push off walls faster after turns.

Vedaant explained that stronger legs and better kick technique will help both his single 200m event and his team's relay race.

Born in 2005 to actor R Madhavan and Sarita Birje, Vedaant chose sports over acting early on. And his family moved to Dubai during the pandemic to help him get better training facilities.  In Dubai he had access to full sized pools year-round.

R Madhavan credits his son's focus to a strict morning schedule. Waking up at 4:00 AM for practice meant Vedaant had to go to sleep by 8:00 PM every night. This 4 AM habit helps him stay disciplined throughout his teenage years according to R Madhavan

How Vedaant Deals with Pressure and Expectation as R Madhavan’s Son?

Being a competitor in India will also bring him more attention, considering that he is the son of an actress. But according to Vedaant, his daily routine keeps him calm after stepping into the blocks.

"We're trained in a specific way where pressure shouldn't affect us. When we go to the pool, it's just us in the water and nothing else," Vedaant Madhavan told PTI

It was also added that being in camp for such a considerable time has enabled the Indian swimmers to have an intimate relationship which gives them additional confidence going to Japan.

As the 2026 Asian Games draw near Vedaant has been focusing on his stroke rate, turns, and start times. He plans to break his personal record through the combination of his early morning routine and new strength training and contribute to India's score in the pool.
