Puducherry, a city in India, is often called the French Riviera of the East. This seaside town is situated on the Coromandel Coast by the Bay of Bengal. It is the capital of the Union Territory of Puducherry. The city got this nickname because of its unique French background and buildings that look like those in the Mediterranean.

For almost 300 years, it was the center of French India. Today, it still shows a special mix of South Indian traditions and European history. This article explores the origin of Puducherry, its architecture, and its historical significance.

Puducherry is called the French Riviera of the East because of its long past as a French colony. The city has a walkway by the sea, streets in a grid layout, and yellow colonial-style houses that look like those in French coastal towns. It stayed under French control until 1954, which was a lot longer than areas of India that were ruled by the British.

Why is Puducherry called the French Riviera of the East?

Puducherry has this name because it looks a lot like the real French Riviera in Europe. The way the city is arranged follows a special grid pattern, which is not common in older cities in India. The popular Promenade Beach has a long walkway to the ocean. This reminds visitors of the coastal towns in southern France.

The architecture of the buildings is the main reason for this name. The eastern part of the city is called the French Quarter or White Town. In this area, the buildings have tall walls and fancy gates. Most of them are painted bright yellow and white. These houses usually have curved windows and quiet backyards. This style comes from the warm weather and French designs.

The History of French Influence in Puducherry

The French connection started in the late 1600s. In 1674, the French East India Company set up a small trading station here. François Martin was the first Governor of this area. He turned the little fishing village into a busy port for trade.

The city went through many fights between the French and the British. It changed ownership several times in the 1700s and 1800s. But, the French held on to control for most of that time until the mid-1900s. Unlike the rest of India, which became free from Britain in 1947, Puducherry stayed under French rule till 1954.

Administrative Structure and Political History of Puducherry

Puducherry is not a state; it is a Union Territory. It has its own Legislative Assembly and a Chief Minister. This is different from other Union Territories in India. The territory has four different districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam, and Mahe.

These four districts are far apart from one another. For instance, Mahe is on the west coast in Kerala, while Yanam is in Andhra Pradesh. This arrangement is because of the location of French trading posts in the region. The Treaty of Cession, which was signed in 1956, officially made these areas part of India.

Who was the founder of modern Puducherry?

François Martin is considered the founder of modern Puducherry. He was the first Governor of the French settlement in 1674. He built roads and trade routes that helped the city become an important port.

When did Puducherry become part of India?

Puducherry became part of the Indian Union on November 1, 1954. This day is known as De Facto Transfer Day. The official or De Jure transfer happened later on August 16, 1962, after the French Parliament approved the agreement.

Is Puducherry the same as Pondicherry?

Yes, both are the same place. The Government of India changed the name from Pondicherry to Puducherry in September 2006. The name "Puducherry" means "New Village" in Tamil.
