Every outstanding innovation starts with an easy question: can this problem be solved in a better way? For engineers, this curiosity regularly becomes the starting point for ideas that have the potential to improve lives, rework industries, and maximize society’s ability to cope with a number of pressing and demanding situations.

Across campus, in labs and workshops, students are developing prototypes, test new technologies and reimagine everyday solutions. While academic projects are often confined to lecture halls, international innovation forums increasingly encourage young engineers to take those ideas in addition to seeing them in contrast to real desires.

One such initiative is the James Dyson Award, an international design and engineering competition that recognises innovative solutions developed by university students and recent graduates.

A platform that encourages problem solvers

The James Dyson Award is built on a simple philosophy: find a real problem, design an effective solution and build something that works.

Each year, the James Dyson Award receives entries from aspiring engineers and designers working on solutions across healthcare, sustainability, accessibility, education, mobility, and environmental protection. The competition recognises ideas that solve real problems through effective engineering and design.

For students, it provides an opportunity to showcase their ideas on a global scale and gain knowledge of how thoughtful engineering design can be translated into meaningful impact. Entries for the 2026 edition are open until July 15, so it’s an important time for college students to learn the admissions process, eligibility requirements, and what makes a strong submission.

To help participants understand the award, Jagran Josh brings to you a an exclusive webinar on July 6, 2026, from 3p.m. onwards on the Jagran Josh YouTube channel.

The session is designed for engineering students, innovators, researchers and junior experts who have developed prototypes, worked on a university assignment or are looking for ideas that alleviate real-world issues.

Expert Guidance for Aspiring Innovators

The webinar will serve as a unique panel of experts from academia, industry career guidance, and innovation, providing individuals with diverse perspectives on engineering, product improvement, and adventures from idea to impact.

  • Alex Hudson, Design Engineer at Dyson, where he develops new concepts tailored to the needs of consumers in India. Having joined Dyson through the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology (DIET), Alex brings experience in product development, design thinking, and engineering innovation. As a patent holder for an innovative air purifier design, he offers valuable insights into building engineering solutions that address real-world problems.

  • Dr. Shivendra Mathur, Registrar and Professor at NIIT University, also heads the Industry Linked Programmes. With many years of experience in bridging the needs of engineering education and industry, he has mentored many students, in experiential learning, innovation and problem solving as key drivers of hit engineering careers.

  • Mr. Ritesh Chawla, co-founder of RiarPro Learning Solutions is a well-known career counsellor and EdTech entrepreneur. Through his work with students and foundations, he has helped aspiring engineers discover their strengths, build future-ready careers, and bridge the distance between academic learning and evolving entrepreneurial expectations.

  • Tunir Sahoo, the national winner of the James Dyson Award 2025 in India, will share his first-hand joy of participating inside the competition. He became known for JivaScope, a pocket-sized, AI-powered device that allows individuals to self-test for coronary artery disease and lung disease within minutes, making scientific diagnosis more accessible, especially in underserved communities It provides a practical perspective.

The James Dyson Award recognises and celebrates effective engineering solutions and encourage all to innovate and invent that can aid in improving lives. The last date for entry submission is 15th July 2026.

Here’s how you can enter the James Dyson Award 2026 and begin your journey:
