Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" centers on Mathilde Loisel, a stunning but unhappy woman who believes she was destined for a life of luxury rather than her modest middle-class upbringing. Due to her conceit, Mathilde borrows a stunning diamond necklace from her affluent acquaintance Madame Forestier in order to conceal her relative poverty after her clerk husband receives an invitation to a lavish ministerial gala. She has a terrific time at the party, but when she realizes the necklace is stolen, her joy turns to terror. The couple is afraid of the truth, so they take out disastrous loans to buy a replacement that costs 36,000 francs. They then return it to Forestier without acknowledging the loss.

In order to pay off the huge debt, the replacement pushes the Loisels into ten years of extreme poverty and difficult labor. As Mathilde works tirelessly alongside her husband, she loses her youthful beauty and charm and becomes a hardened woman of the poor. After eventually paying off the loan ten years later, Mathilde runs into Madame Forestier and explains the whole thing. Forestier admits that the original jewelry was a fake, valued little more than 500 francs, in a cruel turn of situational irony. The narrative ends with a dramatic lesson about the dangers of arrogance, the hollowness of appearances, and the great price of lying.
