Education Ministry and NIOS Launch Mission Mode Plan to Re-Enroll 2 Crore Dropout Students Across India
Education Ministry and NIOS have started a high-level strategy to bring over 2 crore out-of-school children back into the formal education system. This new initiative focuses on students aged from 14-18, and will offer flexible open learning and vocational training to ensure academic completion and employability.
Ministry of Education, MoE, in collaboration with the National Institute of Open Schooling, NIOS, recently called a high-level meeting to address India’s dropout crisis. This high-level meeting was chaired by Sanj Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, DoSEL, the session aimed to create a plan for re-enrolling an estimated 2 crore children between the ages of 14 and 18 who have dropped out of school.
Data of the dropout students highlights a concerning trend, for every 100 students who enter Class 1, only 62 students complete Class 12. Some socioeconomic factors, including financial restrictions and household responsibilities, are some of the primary factors that drive this decline. To fight this and increase the number of students who complete Class 12, the Government has launched the initiative ‘Mission Mode’ approach, shifting from a traditional, rigid structure to a more adaptable system.
Phased Rollout of Mission Mode and Vocational Integration
The initiative will first be implemented as a pilot project across 10 districts in states with high dropout rates, including the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Odisha. Beyond basic literacy, the program emphasises senior secondary completion paired with practical vocational skills tailored to the local economies.
By installing app-based monitoring tools and trained facilitators, the government of India aims to transform this new initiative into a people’s movement, and this also ensures that no student is left behind due to socioeconomic restrictions.
