HDFC Bank Ranks Third In Forbes’ Global List

HDFC Bank has claimed the third place in Forbes's positioning of the world’s top banks in 2026 list. It is the only Indian bank to make it to the global top 10 global ranking.

The list, which was compiled by Forbes in partnership with Statista, takes into account values from a combination of both financial data and research.

While the first two positions are taken by Singapore banks, HDFC is not very behind in the data.  The position of HDFC bank puts India on the global front in the financial sector.

Forbes used objective financial data from providers such as the S&P Capital IQ platform, along with desk research and information submitted by banks to Forbes.com.

  • No. 1: Singapore-based OCBC secured the first position with a reported value of $525 billion.
  • No. 2:DCB ranked second with a reported value of $698 billion.
  • No. 3: India’s HDFC Bank secured the third position with a reported value of $518 billion.

How Were The Banks Ranked?

For students and readers trying to understand banking performance, the ranking is particularly interesting because Forbes used four major financial parameters.

  • Profitability- 30%: Measures how effectively a bank generates profits.
  • Capital And Funding Resilience- 25%: Looks at the bank’s ability to maintain financial strength and meet its obligations.
  • Asset Quality And Efficiency- 25%: Examines the quality of assets and how efficiently the bank operates.
  • Growth And Earnings Quality- 20%: Measures business expansion and the sustainability of earnings.

Before calculating the final scores, all the eligible banks were divided into six asset-size categories. This was done to make comparisons fairer between banks of similar sizes.

Why Is This Ranking Very Important For HDFC Bank?

The ranking list is out at a very important moment for HDFC Bank. The Indian lender HDFC Bank is going to have a leadership shakeup soon. It is all set for the transition and change in the hierarchy, as the move towards announcing its new CEO. The bank has submitted its two preferences to the Reserve Bank of India for the position of its MD and CEO. Kaizad Bharucha is the top name for the position given internally. As the current CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan’s term ends on 26 October 2026, the board is all set for the new takeover.
