Tata Consultancy Services or rather commonly known as TCS, is one of the largest Indian based IT companies. 

It ranks as one of the most valuable technology companies in the world and a name that is talked about in the boardrooms. However, the main question that arises about this company is “Who is the owner of TCS?” 

This is one of the most debated questions that surrounds the company. While the name follows the legacy of Ratan Tata who was the chairman of the company, his demise changed the dynamics of the organization. So, here is the information about the owner of TCS and its interesting history. 

Who is the Owner of TCS? 

In a direct way, TCS is predominantly owned by Tata Sons Private Limited which is the holding company and promoter of all companies of Tata group. As of 2024, Tata Sons owns 71.74% of TCS 

TCS is headquartered in Mumbai, and as per Tata Group 2025 report, it is #2 in Global IT Services & Consultancy company. It operates in 55 countries and has 200+ delivery centers. The report mentions: “#2 Global IT Services & Consultancy company. Recognised as the Global Top Employer for the tenth successive year. Present in 55 countries with 200+ service delivery centres.”

Who Was the Founder of TCS?

TCS had its foundation in the year 1968 when there was barely an IT industry in India. Its origin was the idea of an electrical engineer F.C. Kohli who is popularly known as the Father of the Indian Software Industry and chairman of the Tata Group, J.R.D. Tata 

Kohli was a historic influence. In the 1990s, when the Y2K problem was quite large, TCS came ahead and maintained more than 700 million lines of code - approximately 30 percent of all code in the world. As of 2018, TCS is the first Indian company listed to achieve a market capitalisation of more than $100 billion. 

The Tata Group mentions: “In the 1990s, when the Y2K problem loomed large, Mr Kohli saw an opportunity. TCS processed and fixed 700 million+ lines or ~30% of the global code, leading to a revenue influx. In 2018, TCS crossed $100 billion in market capitalisation — the first listed Indian company to do so — and is now ranked the world’s second most valuable IT services brand by Brand Finance.”

Who is the Current Chairman of TCS?

The man at the helm of the Tata Group today and hence the most influential person in charge of TCS is Natarajan Chandrasena popularly known as Chandra. Tata Sons Private Limited is the holding company, the promoter of all Tata Group companies and its Chairman is Chandrasekaran.

He became a Board member of Tata Sons in October 2016, and became Chairman in January 2017. He has a cumulative 30 years experience with the TCS itself; 8 of which was as the CEO and Managing Director. 

The TCS website mentions: “Natarajan Chandrasekaran (Chandra) is the Chairman of Tata Sons Private Limited (Tata Sons), the holding company and promoter of all Tata group companies. Chandra joined the Board of Tata Sons in October 2016 and was appointed as Chairman in January 2017. Before becoming the Chairman of Tata Sons, he served 30 years in Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) including 8 years as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director (CEO&MD), until 2017.”

Who is the Current CEO of TCS?

Even though Chandrasekaran is in charge of the Tata Group in general, it is the CEO of TCS who takes care of the daily business operations of TCS. On June 1, 2023 Krithi joined Tata Consultancy Services as the new CEO and MD. 

The TCS website mentions: “K. Krithivasan, also known as Krithi, took over as the CEO & MD of Tata Consultancy Services on June 1, 2023. In his three-decade plus tenure at TCS, he has held various leadership roles in delivery, customer relationship management, large program management and sales and has a strong track record of successfully leading TCS’ largest industry vertical, the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance business.”

TCS is owned by the Tata Group through Tata Sons which was founded by the legendary JRD Tata and built up by F.C. Kohli into a global company. TCS is now the most desired corporate asset in India and one of the most reputed technology companies in the world.
