Who is the Owner of DeepSeek?

The world is rapidly changing with artificial intelligence and there is almost a new name in the race every day. DeepSeek is one such AI platform that hails from China and it made headlines around the world in early 2025 when its AI tool went head to head against the one of best in the business, ChatGPT. The platform has over 57.2 million downloads as of May 2025. But, who is the mind behind this company? Let's find out who is the owner of DeepSeek.

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial intelligence company that was launched in January 2025. It generates AI models, essentially code written by a computer that can answer questions, write code, solve problems and have a conversation, like ChatGPT.

Its headquarters are located in Hangzhou, China, Zhejiang province. This was officially registered on 17th July 2023.

Who is the Owner of DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is the brainchild of a 40 year old Chinese entrepreneur, Liang Wenfeng. According to various reports, he has a major stake in DeepSeek via his hedge fund High-Flyer. The rest of the platform is owned by people who work very closely with him.

Unlike most other large corporations out there that have millions of shareholders,  DeepSeek is mostly owned by one person.

Who is Liang Wenfeng?

Liang Wenfeng was born in 1985 in Wuchuan, Guangdong, which is a small city in southern China. His father was a primary school teacher. He has been quite a sharp student from a young age and was very good at mathematics.

In 2002, at the age of 17, he got admission to Zhejiang University which is one of China’s oldest universities. He completed both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the field of engineering, specialising in information and communication technology.

After his studies, he combined his love for mathematics and computers and started working in the world of finance and investing.

How Did Liang Wenfeng Build His Fortune?

After graduation, Liang Wenfeng began to leverage his math skills and AI to predict stock markets and make investment decisions. This is known as quantitative investing and that is how he made a large chunk of his wealth.

He founded a company called "High-Flyer", a fund that invests in the stock markets using AI in 2015. The company experienced very quick growth.

What is High-Flyer and How is it Connected to DeepSeek?

High-Flyer is the parent company for DeepSeek which provides financial backing for the company. Unfortunately for High-Flyer, it didn't work out in the stock market as they had hoped and in 2022 they decided to change the course.

High-Flyer announced it will not only concentrate on finance but will invest in developing the world's next generation of AI for human good. This is where DeepSeek started in the year 2023.

How Was DeepSeek Born?

As he continued running High-Flyer, Liang Wenfeng quietly began purchasing thousands of high-performance computer chips produced by Nvidia in 2021.

In 2021, while still running High-Flyer, Liang Wenfeng quietly started buying thousands of powerful computer chips made by Nvidia. These chips are needed to build and train AI models. He bought 10,000 such chips before the US government banned the sale of these chips to China.

This was a smart move. When the ban came, most Chinese AI companies could not get the chips they needed. But Liang already had them. This gave DeepSeek a huge advantage.

DeepSeek was officially founded in July 2023. Liang Wenfeng became its CEO and has been running it since then.

Is DeepSeek a Government Company?

DeepSeek is a company that operates privately. It's not controlled or owned by the Chinese government. Liang Wenfeng personally owns the bulk of the company and provides funding for the company with High-Flyer without raising any capital from external sources.

But, the success of DeepSeek, pulled in the attention from the Chinese government. In January 2025, the Prime Minister of China, Mr Li Qiang, invited Liang to be one of only nine to speak at a special meeting.

DeepSeek is the story of a small-town boy from Guangdong who became an AI hero. Liang Wenfeng grew up in a modest household, studied hard, built a billion-dollar finance company, and then used his resources to take on the biggest AI companies in the world. Today, he is seen as one of China's most important figures in technology. This is a story of how one small group can make a difference when they have a vision and they prepare.
