What is the Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Drive? Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s Initiative Explained

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Drive coordinates volunteer, government, and community efforts to remove waste, reduce pollution, and restore the river's ecological balance for sustainable urban development.

The Yamuna Riverbank Clean Up Campaign is intended to increase Habitat and Environmental conditions of the Yamuna with a coordinated approach to cleaning the river bank by using a common efforts to increase clean-up procedures, remove trash from the banks of the Yamuna River  to create awareness within public to participate in implementing these types of community services.

The current campaign is being spear-headed by the Chief Minister of New Delhi, Rekha Gupta, who is trying to ensure cleaning up of various polluted ghats and nearby river banks that have suffered from lack of cleaning for many years and ineffective disposing of wastes.

In addition, this campaign will continue to promote involvement by citizens, residents, students, volunteers, and other community organizations to keep the area clean and to prevent further polluting/ damage to the Yamuna River ecosystem. In general terms, this campaign is part of a large plan to assist the ecological recovery of the Yamuna River and to encourage healthy, sustainable urban development practices.

What Is the Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Drive? 

The Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Initiative incorporates an eco-friendly purpose which improves the cleanliness of the Yamuna Riverbanks and its environmental condition. The initiative tackles 3 aspects, the removal of garbage, reduction of pollution and increase in sanitation throughout the major stretches of the Yamuna River and aims to educate the public on the need to maintain a clean Yamuna River and preserve the ecological balance of the Yamuna River System. 

The clean-up of garbage in the community is performed through coordinating the activities of volunteer groups with local government and non-profit organisations, through litter collection, improved waste management and disposal, etc. The Cleanliness Initiative for the Yamuna Riverbank has the overall purpose of promoting the need for future generations to have a sustainable approach to development of this environmentally significant and historic River in Delhi and take a collective responsibility to maintain the health of the Yamuna for generations to come.

Key Initiatives of Yamuna Cleanliness Program

The purpose of the Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Program is to implement an effective environmental program that will clean up and restore the polluted riverbanks of the Yamuna River through basic removal of solid waste and debris and contamination in the river, and to improve current practices of waste management to stop the further polluting of the Yamuna River.

It also includes creating a system for monitoring and enforcing cleanliness to maintain cleanliness and have a long-lasting impact on the cleanliness of the Yamuna River. One of the important aspects of this programme is social responsibility by encouraging citizens, volunteers and community-based organisations to participate in the clean-up of contaminated areas.

It incorporates the federal government, state government and local governments working together with the citizens, as well as the private sector and non-profit organisations, in promoting better water quality, cleaner air, reduced urban decay, improved safety and social equity within the communities in which they live, therefore, contributing to the ecological restoration and continued sustainability of the Yamuna River.

Who Attended Maa Yamuna Cleanliness Drive?

Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi led a cleanliness campaign at Dashmesh Ghat located in Geeta Colony. The Delhi Minister for Drinking Water Supply, Parvesh Verma was also present at Hathi Ghat participating as part of this campaign.

The Delhi Assembly Speaker, Vijender Gupta also joined up at Purana Pul in connection with the initiative. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari attended and made mention of the Swachh Bharat slogan being part of this drive and supporting the Clean Ganga movement. 

Shikha Rai (MLA) helped clean the banks of the river. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, BJP Leader was out with other community members supporting this initiative. BJP workers/volunteers were out cleaning various ghats along the Yamuna River.

Community and social organisations worked together with other government officials and community representatives to assist these efforts as well. Thousands of local people as well as citizens took part simultaneously in this effort across 28 ghats located along the banks of the Yamuna River in Delhi.
