The Asian Games 2026 are now just two weeks away and excitement among fans is already building. This year’s edition will start from September 19, 2026, at Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City in Japan.
The Asian Games are the biggest multi-sport event in the Asian continent and the second biggest sporting event after the Olympics. Thousands of athletes from around the world compete in multiple sports and disciplines for medals.
What Are New Sports in Asian Games 2026?
In this edition, there will be 43 sports. More than 11,000 athletes are expected to compete across 43 sports, 71 disciplines and 469 medal events. Below are details of six sports that were added to this edition of Asian Games.
However, only in one of these 6 sports there will be Indian participation. Here is the list of sports that are set for debut in Asian Games 2026:
Freestyle BMX
This is a form of cycling that involves jumping, performing tricks and stunts on a bike commonly known as BMX. This sport has evolved from BMX riding in the United States and has become popular in Europe, North America and Australia.
Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combat sport involving techniques from different martial arts. This sport has become very popular in the United States and Brazil and has a following in Asia.
Surfing
Surfing is a water sport where the surfers ride waves on their surfboards. This sport has its origins in Hawaii and is popular in countries such as Australia, the United States and Japan.
Four athletes from India will participate in this category and they are: Kishore Kumar, Sivaraj Babu, Kamali Prakash and Sugar Shanti Gayen.
Teqball
Teqball is a form of football played on a curved table. Players use various parts of the body in an attempt to return the ball over the net. This sport was invented in Hungary in 2014 and is now quite popular in several European and Asian countries.
Padel
Padel is a racquet sport incorporating both elements of tennis and squash. It is usually played in doubles within an enclosed court setting. The sport originated from Mexico and it is very popular in Spain. It has also gained rapid popularity throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
Virtual Taekwondo
Virtual Taekwondo is the technologically based form of the taekwondo discipline that features competitions through the use of motion capturing and virtual technology.
