More than 13,000 schools across India are being upgraded into model institutions under the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) Scheme, directly benefiting over 20 lakh students
The Central Government’s flagship PM SHRI scheme is showing major results. More than 13,000 schools across the country are being upgraded as model schools, a move that will directly benefit over 20 lakh students.
As per the data shared by the Ministry of Education on September 15, as many as 13,092 schools have been selected under the scheme till July 2026. This accounts for nearly 90% of the total target of 14,500 schools.
What is PM SHRI Scheme?
PM SHRI stands for Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India. The centrally sponsored scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 7, 2022, and has now completed four years.
The objective is to strengthen existing schools and develop them as exemplar schools in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These schools will not just provide quality education themselves, but will also act as a mentor institution for other schools in their vicinity.
The scheme is being implemented from 2022-23 to 2026-27 with a total financial outlay of Rs 27,360 crore. The Centre’s share in this is Rs 18,128 crore.

How Will PM SHRI Schools Be Different?
The selected schools are being revamped with a focus on all-round development. The government is working on improving infrastructure, modern pedagogy and inclusive, joyful learning.
These schools will have upgraded labs, libraries, smart classrooms, and will promote green practices and sustainability. There will be special emphasis on experiential learning, technology-driven education, and skill development to prepare students for the 21st century.
The list includes schools managed by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), as well as state and UT government schools selected through Challenge Mode.
According to PIB, India currently has 14.71 lakh schools serving 24.69 crore students. PM SHRI schools aim to create a nurturing environment for holistic growth and better learning outcomes.
The funding has also seen a sharp rise. The Project Approval Board (PAB) outlay has gone up from Rs 2,520 crore in 2023-24 to Rs 5,224 crore in 2026-27 an increase of over 107%.
