NIRF Ranking Race: 100 Bengal Colleges Shortlisted, Including Four from North Bengal

NIRF Rankings 2026: More than 100 educational institutions in West Bengal have already registered for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) evaluation process, where four colleges from the North Bengal region have managed to make it to the shortlist of institutions to undergo this national ranking evaluation round. The shortlisted educational institutions would be assessed based on five important performance criteria set up by the Ministry of Education, which include Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Peer Perception. 

It is worth noting that in the previous years, the state of West Bengal has been able to make its mark in the NIRF rankings through a number of high-performing institutions including Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, and excellent colleges such as St. Xavier's College and Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College. This makes the fact that four colleges from the North Bengal region are included in this year's NIRF shortlist very significant for the region.

Key Highlights of the NIRF Shortlist

State-Level Participation: More than 100 institutes of higher learning from West Bengal managed to fulfill all the submission criteria and join the competition for the national rankings.

North Bengal’s Participation: Four institutes of North Bengal managed to make it to the short list, thus emphasizing the growing presence of the region in the world of quality higher education.

Parameters of Assessment: The assessment criteria of short-listed institutions by the Ministry of Education include the following five categories:

• Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR)

• Research and Professional Practice (RPP)

• Graduation Outcomes (GO)

• Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)

• Peer Perception

State-Level Performance Context

Top institutes from West Bengal always occupy prominent positions in the NIRF rankings. Some of the important milestones set by West Bengal are:

• College Ranking – Top institutes such as Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College (Rahara), St. Xavier’s College (Kolkata), and Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira (Belur Math) always feature in the top 10 of India.  

• University & Engineering – Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, and IIT Kharagpur continue to be flag bearers in overall rankings.

• Growth Regionally: Four colleges from North Bengal in the rankings is an indication of improvement in the infrastructure of colleges associated with regional universities, such as NBU.
