A group of young students from Virginia won national recognition after creating an anti-bullying chatbot at the first Presidential Artificial Intelligence Challenge awards ceremony held at the White House on Tuesday. The winning team was made up largely of Indian-American students who received the National Champion Award in the Elementary School Track 2 category for their project, the “Friendzone Chatbot Bullying Prevention App.” The awards were presented by First Lady Melania Trump who praised the students as the future of America and highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in education and innovation. White House Honors Young AI Talent

The award-winning Virginia team included Aarna Jaiswal, Eshani Khatri, Riva Madda, Samhitha Pinnamareddy, and Sanuli Rathnayake from Aldie. Their chatbot stood out for addressing bullying an issue that affects many school children across the country. At the event Melania Trump applauded the students for their ideas, creativity and effort. She said it was inspiring to see such a strong group of young innovators at the White House and called them the future leaders of the nation.

The challenge drew participation from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Department of Defence schools overseas. According to the First Lady, more than 20,000 students took part in the competition, showing strong national interest in AI and its future possibilities.

Student Projects Solve Real-World Problems

Several other students were also honored for building AI tools aimed at solving everyday problems. A team from NorthStar Middle School in Sammamish, Washington: Viha Iyer, Arya Pratap, and Shrimayi Shetty won the Middle School Track 1 category for their project “Skillup.” In the high school division, Khandakar Mahin of Pennsylvania won Track 1 for a computer vision project designed to help identify hotel rooms in criminal investigations. Mahin is set to graduate this week and will attend Harvard University in the fall.

Other winners included students from Tennessee for their “Homework Helper” project, Shan Vance from Florida for using AI to detect urban blight through street view images and Alexander Du from Pennsylvania for creating a navigation framework for visually impaired people in complex city environments. Together these projects showed how students are already using AI to improve safety, learning and accessibility in meaningful ways.
