Which Indian District is Highly Affected Due to Floods in Nepal in 2026?

Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are the two Indian states that are Highly Affected Due to Floods in Nepal.

This year in 2026, many districts from both Bihar & Uttar Pradesh including West Champaran, East Champaran, Vaishali, Saran, Kushinagar and Maharajganj have seen the highest affected.

These districts are affected because many rivers which originated in Nepal and flow toward these Indian states like in UP and Bihar.

When Nepal gets heavy rain or a glacier bursts in the mountains, the extra water has nowhere to go except downstream into India. That’s the reason why these districts are highly affected.

Let’s explore this article in detail, and learn which are others district of Uttar Pradesh & Bihar, which are highly affected due to floods in nepal.

Why Does a Flood in Nepal Affect India?

As we know, Nepal is located on the hills, and situated in Himalaya range and India's Bihar and UP is located right below in the plains.

Many rivers like the Narayani in Nepal become the Gandak once they cross into India. So whatever extra water enters the river in Nepal has to pass through Indian towns and villages next.

In August 2026, an ice and rock broke off a glacier near the Nepal-Tibet border, which is called a glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF for short. It causes plenty of water rushing down through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers inside Nepal, and the pressure was later felt in the Gandak river in India too.

Did You Know?

  • The Narayani river which originated from the Nhubine Himal Glacier near the Nepal-Tibet border in the Mustang region of Nepal when it entered India in Bihar state, this river is called Gandak River.

  • In August 2026, when the flood came surprisingly, it was thought the flood arrived due to REarthquake. But, later on the scientists have cleared the doubt that there has been glacier collapse, not any earthquake.

  • Bihar's Gandak barrage once released 2,24,000 cusecs of water in a single day back on 14 July 2026, one of the highest ever recorded.

Bihar Districts Affected by Nepal Flood (2026)

Bihar faced flooding in two waves this year. The first wave came right after the Nepal glacier burst in August. The second, much bigger wave came in September due to heavy monsoon rain filling up the same rivers.

Bihar and UP are the main states, but they are not the only ones. In earlier flood years, like 2024, the flood water from Nepal also caused problems in parts of Assam and even reached northern Bangladesh. So while this year's news is mostly about Bihar and UP, the same river system can carry the effect further east if the rain continues.
