Deputy Chief Ministers of Maharashtra: The position of Deputy Chief Minister (Deputy CM) of Maharashtra has played a significant role in the state’s political and administrative framework. Although the Constitution of India does not mandate the post, Maharashtra has frequently appointed deputy chief ministers to ensure political stability, administrative balance, and coordination within coalition governments.
Over the decades, the role has evolved from being largely symbolic to one that carries substantial influence in governance, decision-making, and policy implementation.
Since the late 1970s, Maharashtra has witnessed several leaders from different political parties serving as deputy chief minister. Many of them have later gone on to hold top positions, including the office of Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers at the Centre, or senior party leadership roles.
The tenure of Deputy CMs has often reflected the political dynamics of the state, especially during coalition eras involving parties such as the Indian National Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Nationalist Congress Party, and Shiv Sena.
