Why is Indian Army Day Celebrated?

The Indian Army Day dates back to January 15, 1949 when the then British General Sir Francis Roy Bucher was replaced by Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa who became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief

Such a shift was a sign of total claim of Indian military autonomy after the colonial rule, amid the catastrophe of Partition and the 1947-48 war of Indian and Pakistan.

The leadership of Cariappa stressed the traditions of discipline, secularism, nation-building, establishing the theme of the development of the Army as a replacement of the British Indian Army to a self-sufficient one.

The forces of the Indian Army that had its foundations in the armed forces of the East India Company have since served in major conflicts such as 1962, 1965, 1971, Kargil 1999, and in UN peacekeeping operations around the world.
