The counting of votes for six by-elections across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry has started on October 9, 2026, with the results being closely analysed for their political consequences. The contests cover five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha seat, offering an early indication of how political parties are performing following the recent Assembly elections.

The key constituencies in spotlight include Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Dharapuram and Madurantakam in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady in Puducherry, and the Nagaon parliamentary constituency in Assam. The Election Commission of India is publishing constituency-wise counting updates on its official results portal.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared the results of the October 2026 Assembly and parliamentary by-elections on October 9, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning both contested seats in West Bengal and the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) securing victories in two Tamil Nadu constituencies. The results also covered a Puducherry Assembly by-election, while the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam was held under heightened security arrangements.

West Bengal Assembly By-Elections Results

The BJP secured victories in both Nandigram and Rejinagar, according to the reported results.

In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasirani Rath won after polling 1,64,427 votes, defeating her nearest rival by a substantial margin.

In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar secured 1,29,914 votes, accounting for 63.14% of the total vote share. He defeated Golam Nabi Azad of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) by a margin of 75,816 votes.

The results gave the BJP both seats contested in the West Bengal Assembly by-elections.

Tamil Nadu Assembly By-Elections Results

The ruling TVK, led by Chief Minister Vijay, won both reserved constituencies of Dharapuram and Madurantakam in Tamil Nadu.

In Dharapuram (SC), TVK candidate P. Sathyabama defeated the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) S. Suganya by 9,471 votes.

In Madurantakam (SC), TVK candidate K. Maragatham Kumaravel emerged victorious against DMK candidate I. Paranthaman and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate Kanitha Sampath.

The two victories marked an important electoral contest for the ruling party and added to its representation in the state Assembly.

Puducherry Assembly By-Election Outcome

In Puducherry, Ashok Anand of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) was declared the winner of the Thattanchavady Assembly by-election by the Election Commission of India.

The result added another constituency to the list of by-election outcomes announced on October 9.

Assam Lok Sabha By-Election 2026

In Assam, the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election was conducted amid heightened security arrangements. Authorities imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain public order during the counting process.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who stepped down to contest the Assam Assembly elections.

The Nagaon contest drew attention because of its parliamentary significance and the political developments surrounding Bordoloi's resignation. The final outcome should be confirmed against the Election Commission's official results.
