Bharat Taxi: Union Minister Amit Shah to Launch the Bharat Taxi Services on February 5, 2025 from New Delhi, India. India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, a significant milestone in the Government of India’s continued efforts to strengthen the cooperative sector and promote inclusive, citizen-centric mobility solutions. Bharat Taxi is a driver-centric initiative that promises "Zero Commission" for drivers and significantly cheaper fares for passengers.
Bharat Taxi is based on Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’(Prosperity through Cooperation) as a "Make in India" cooperative alternative. Unlike traditional apps, Bharat Taxi is not just a service it is a cooperative where every driver is a stakeholder. By eliminating the 30% middleman commission, the platform ensures that drivers earn more while passengers pay less.
What is Bharat Taxi?
Bharat Taxi is operated by the Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited (STCL) under the Ministry of Cooperation and registered under Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, and was established on 6 June 2025 to strengthen cooperatives as an effective means of employment generation, social security, and grassroots-level economic participation, placing drivers Known as Sarathis keep them at the centre of ownership, operations, and value creation, thereby freeing them from exploitative aggregator-based models.

Cooperative model: It is a cooperative model where drivers are co-owners, direct distribution of profits to drivers, presenting an indigenous alternative to foreign investment-based aggregator platforms.

Drivers(Sarthis): Based on the principle of ‘Sarathi Hi Malik’ with 0% commission on rides. Drivers pay a flat ₹30 daily access fee (₹18 for autos).

Social Security: Sarathis through health insurance, accident insurance, retirement savings, and a dedicated driver support system.

A personal accident insurance cover of ₹5 lakh and a family health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh for the Sarathi(drivers).

The platform provides rapid emergency assistance, verified ride data, and allows drivers the freedom to work on other platforms without any exclusivity clauses.

For Passengers: it offers a surge-free experience with fares significantly 20-30% lower than private aggregators like Uber and Ola

No Surge Pricing: The platform uses fixed, transparent rates even during peak hours or bad weather because there is no platform commission added to your bill.

Woman Empowerment: It also includes initiatives like Bike Didi to promote women’s empowerment, which are being implemented, under which more than 150 women drivers have joined Bharat Taxi so far.

The platform is currently live in Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot, with a nationwide rollout underway.

How Does Bharat Taxi Works?
Bharat Taxi has emerged as the world’s first and largest cooperative-based ride-hailing platform and the world’s largest driver-owned mobility platform. Around 4 lakh drivers have joined Bharat Taxi platform and over 10 lakh users have successfully registered on the platform so far. Approximately ₹10 crore has been distributed directly to drivers so far.
It is a Cooperative Model registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, where drivers are co-owners. Drivers are called "Sarathis." To join, they purchase a minimum of 5 shares in the cooperative (worth ₹500), making them stakeholders who receive dividends and benefits like health insurance and pensions.
Fare Structure: The pricing is designed to be the "fairest in the market" not just the cheapest:
