CE20 Cryogenic Engine: Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) successfully Conducted sea level test of cryogenic engine at 22-tonne thrust level. CE20 Cryogenic Engine is India’s most powerful cryogenic engine designed by the ISRO to lift heavy payload into space.

ISRO uses the CE20 in the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) rocket and recent successful tests have proved its human-rated capabilities, marking a massive leap toward India's Manned space mission Gaganyaan and future lunar exploration.

ISRO Successfully Conducted a Ground Test: CE20 cryogenic engine

By the successful launch of the CE20 cryogenic engine ISRO has achieved a milestone in self-reliance in heavy-lift capabilities. CE20 conducted a series of hot-fire ground tests at Mahendragiri propulsion complex and got its human rating validation. Highlights an engine must be safe for astronauts and perform flawlessly under extreme conditions.

The successful test confirms that the CE20 cryogenic engine can handle the pressure, thermal stress and vibration which is required for India’s human Space Mission Gaganyaan and LVM3 is ready to launch as a vehicle capable of caring for humans.

What is a CE20 Cryogenic Engine?

ISRO’s CE20 Cryogenic Engine is a high-thrust engine which is used to power the upper stage(C25) of India’s heaviest rocket launcher, Launch Vehicle Mark-3(LVM3). It is a super cooled propellants( Liquid Hydrogen, Liquid Oxygen) which provide higher efficiency and specific impluse.

Key Feature of the CE20 Engine:

  • CE20 operated at the highly robust gas generator cycle which is reliable for long- duration burns.

  • It has massive thrust(200 kN) which makes it one of the most powerful; upper-state engines.

  • Regenerating cooling capacity to prevent the engine from melting during the operation, generally acts as natural coolant.

  • CE20 is totaly indigenously designed and manufactured including the turbo-pumps to the combustion chamber.

ISRO successfully conducted a 22-tonne thrust test of its CE20 Cryogenic Engine, India's most powerful. This engine, used in the LVM3 rocket, has now proven its human-rated capabilities through ground tests at Mahendragiri. This achievement marks a significant step towards India's Gaganyaan manned space mission and future lunar exploration, bolstering self-reliance in heavy-lift capabilities. The indigenous CE20 ensures safety and performance under extreme conditions.
