NEET UG Mock Tests: How to Turn a 600 Score into a Safe 680 for Government MBBS Seats

Getting 600 marks in your NEET UG mock tests is a big deal. This means you have really understood the core concepts and you know your NCERT textbooks well. You are also doing better than people who are taking the test.

However things have changed a lot in the few years when it comes to getting into medical school. A lot of people are doing well and there is a lot of competition. So even if you get 600 marks, which used to be very good, you might not get into one of the government medical colleges under the All India Quota.

To get into a government medical college anywhere in the country you need to do even better. You need to get 680 marks or more. Getting those 80 marks is not about reading more books or studying more hours. It is about doing things in a way and having a good plan for taking the test. Here is how you can do it.

Why Am I Stuck at 600 Marks in NEET Mock Tests?

When I get 600 marks in NEET I am losing around 15 to 20 questions. If I look at my NEET mock test papers I will see that I lost marks because of a few things. There are some possible reasons why I lost marks in my NEET mock tests.

  • Silly mistakes in NEET: I lose around 20 to 30 marks just because I misread the questions, made simple calculation mistakes when I was in a hurry or made mistakes when I was filling out the OMR sheet in my NEET test.
  • The Section B trap in NEET: When I am doing the Section B in my NEET test I often pick questions without thinking instead of choosing them carefully and that leads to losing marks that I could have avoided in my NEET test.
  • Micro-gaps in my NCERT book: Forgetting details like numbers, specific values from labs, names of scientists or small notes at the bottom of the page, in my NCERT book that are hard to find.

How to Increase NEET Mock Test Score from 600 to 680+ Score

1. Stop Passive Reading

When you review a mock test, don’t just look at the answer key and say, "Oh, I knew that formula," and move on. Maintain a dedicated Mistake Notebook. For every single wrong answer, physically write down the exact concept or calculation step that failed you, then immediately open your NCERT textbook to re-read that exact paragraph.

2. Master the "Section B" Decision-Making Process

Section B gives you 15 questions, out of which you only need to attempt 10. Students often view this as a safety net, but it can actually lower your score if you choose impulsively. Take an extra 2 minutes to scan all 15 questions first. Remove the ones with deep mathematical calculations, and only select the 10 where you are 100% sure of the core NCERT fact.

3. Solve Mocks with a "Time Buffer"

To score 680+, you cannot afford panic-induced errors in the final minutes of the exam. Aim to complete your paper 30 to 45 minutes before the actual clock stops.

  • Biology: Finish within 40–45 minutes.
  • Chemistry: Finish within 45–50 minutes.
  • Physics & OMR: Use the remaining time to solve comfortably and double-check your bubbling accuracy.

Subject-Wise Micro-Tweaks Required for 680+ Marks

To bridge the gap between 600 and 680 marks, you must shift from general preparation to targeted, subject-specific refinement. The table below outlines common pitfalls and the exact tactical adjustments required to secure those critical final marks.

Subject

The 600 Mark

The 680+ Strategy

Biology

Overconfidence leading to rushing through Statement-Type and Assertion-Reason questions.

Read all four options carefully even if option (A) looks correct. Use the "Elimination Technique" to prove why the other three choices are incorrect.

Chemistry

Ignoring side-products in Organic named reactions and trends in Inorganic footnotes.

Create a micro-chart of all exceptional trends in Inorganic Chemistry (e.g., ionization enthalpy anomalies) and revise them every single morning.

Physics

Calculation fatigue and losing speed during the last hour of the test.

Dedicate 45 minutes daily to solving mixed-chapter numericals strictly under a physical countdown timer to build high-speed mental math stamina.

How to Avoid Making Mistakes When Filling Out OMR Sheets and Reduce Exam Stress

Filling out the OMR sheet at the end of the exam is not a good idea. If you fill in one bubble incorrectly it can cause a lot of problems with the rest of your answers.

A Better Way to Fill Out Bubbles: Do it one section at a time. For example, fill out the bubbles for the Biology questions as soon as you finish that part. Then move on to the Chemistry questions. Finally the Physics questions. This makes the task less boring. Give your brain a short break, between each subject. It also helps you make sure you have time to fill out all your answers.

One More Thing to Think About: When you look at your practice tests, where are you losing most of your marks? Is it because you do not understand the Physics questions that involve numbers or are you making mistakes on the Biology and Chemistry questions?
