Kendriya Vidyalayas to Have Mandatory Sanskrit Section in Classes 6 and 9 Under NEP 2020

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has directed all its schools across the country to maintain at least one dedicated Sanskrit section in Classes 6 and 9 as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The move aims to strengthen the teaching and learning of classical Indian Languages while promoting India’s linguistic heritage among school students.

KVS Issues New Direction for Sanskrit Sections

According to the latest directive issued by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, every Kendriya Vidyalaya will be required to maintain at least one Sanskrit section in Classes 6 and 9. The decision has been taken in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the preservation and promotion of Indian languages and cultural traditions.
The initiative is expected to ensure wider access to Sanskrit education and encourage students to study one of India's oldest classical languages.

Aligned With National Education Policy 2020

The NEP 2020 highlights the importance of multilingual education and recommends greater exposure to Indian languages, including Sanskrit. By making one Sanskrit section compulsory in Classes 6 and 9, KVS aims to integrate the policy's vision into classroom teaching across its nationwide network of schools.
Officials believe the step will help students develop a deeper understanding of India's linguistic and cultural heritage while supporting holistic education.

What the New Rule Means for Students

Under the new arrangement:

  • Every Kendriya Vidyalaya will maintain at least one Sanskrit section in Classes 6 and 9. The decision is part of the implementation of NEP 2020 recommendations.
  • Schools will ensure the availability of Sanskrit education for eligible students through dedicated sections.
  • Further operational guidelines regarding implementation are expected to be followed by individual Kendriya Vidyalayas as per KVS instructions.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's decision to make one Sanskrit section mandatory in Classes 6 and 9 reflects the broader goals of NEP 2020 to promote Indian languages and cultural knowledge in school education. The initiative is expected to strengthen Sanskrit learning opportunities for students studying in Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country.
