Anthropic Claude Cowork is an agentic AI feature, released as a research preview on 16 January 2026 for Pro Subscribers and 23 January 2026 for Team and Enterprise Plan that allows Claude model to directly perform multi step knowledge work directly in the local files of its users through the Claude Desktop app on macOS.
It is based on the architecture of Claude Code, but extends similar capabilities to non-coding tasks such as organizing files, creating documents, and analyzing data, so that a user can assign the results and leave Claude to run on its own without losing user control.
Claude Cowork transforms AI into outcome-based execution rather than enabling dialogue, whereby users give access to folders and explain what they want to do in natural language.
Claude then designs, subtasks, arranges sub-agents where necessary and generates professional output such as spreadsheets or reports straight into the file system of the user. It facilitates a 200K token context window to work with complex projects without losing details.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is a feature of the Claude Desktop application (macOS only) which provides Claude with agency to read, edit, and make local files without uploading them manually.
It maintains context on tasks that take a long time to complete, executing in a separate virtual machine and protected by memory barriers, and prompted by the user to take important decisions, such as deletions.
It is also unlike a standard chat, which does not carry context through long-running operations. It is done to do work on work automation, which takes professional time on repetitive tasks.

How was Claude Cowork Introduced?

On January 12, 2026, Anthropic launched Cowork, initially to Max subscribers, followed by Pro, Team, and Enterprise at the end of January.

It was a development of Claude Code (launched late 2024), which the developers reused more than code, causing this non-technical adaptation which developers developed over approximately 1.5 weeks using Claude Code itself.

What is the Pricing and Availability for Claude Cowork?
Subscriptions: First Max (then Pro) and above: First $100-200/month (greater limits can be chosen), no current free access or trials, Desktop app is only available on macOS, and requires heavier quota utilization than chat.
Waitlists are used on non-supported plans such as Team/Enterprise when in initial stages.
Safety and Limitations
Claude requests the deletions, or the actions of the browser to explicitly be approved; operates in an isolated VM to avoid damaging the system.

Among them are risks of misinterpretation or immediate injections caused by web content; not controlled workloads since activity is not logged.

Restrictions: No cross-session memory, not cross-platform, application has to remain open, no Projects support yet.
Anthropic plans will be rapid iterating on preview feedback, such as Windows release (mid-2026 est.), provide plugin provisioning to teams and make agentic actions safer.
The expansion to additional plans and devices will make it more accessible than being limited to research preview. The introduction of Claude Cowork and its plugins has also caused major market reactions. The SaaS and tech stocks are falling due to fears of AI automating workflows traditionally handled by specialized software.
