Traveling from New Delhi to Patna now takes about 12 to 17 hours on conventional express trains. But this is about to change as the high-speed rail has been proposed to revolutionize long-distance travel in Northern India. The 1,170 kilometers between Delhi and Patna could be covered in only 4.5 hours with the high-speed rail link. 

The endeavor is aimed at revolutionizing passenger transport, economic trade and tourism in the Indo-Gangetic plain region.

Significance of the Project

• Reducing Congestion on Crowded Rail Lines: The Delhi-Uttar Pradesh-Bihar railway route is one of the most crowded train lines in India and suffers from regular passenger overload especially during times of festivals like Diwali and Chhath Puja. It will develop an express rail link to decrease the burden on the trains.
• Increase in Employment and Tourism: Reducing the travel time between Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna to just a few hours will enhance trade and the movement of businesspersons and employment in North India. It will also help tourists visiting places like Agra, Prayagraj and Varanasi for transit.
• Emphasising Modern Mobility: The project will implement a high-speed rail system that will make it possible to travel at speeds of up to 320 km/h and provide clean and quick transport solutions.

The proposed Delhi-Patna high-speed rail corridor is a huge advancement in transport infrastructure strategy in India. The journey that usually lasts for 12 to 15 hours to cover the distance of 1,170 kilometers is expected to take only 4.5 hours with the launch of this new railway corridor.
