Is Presidents Day a Federal Holiday?

Presidents Day, also known as Washington’s Birthday and a federal holiday, falls on the third Monday of February every year. 

Because it is a federal holiday, all federal offices are closed, and all federal employees receive a paid leave day. Many national institutions will also close their facilities to the public.

Presidents’ Day is recognized by the federal government as Washington’s Birthday. All federal calendars and government documents still use that name.

What Is Closed on Presidents Day?

Federal Government Offices

On Presidents’ Day, all non-essential Federal Government Services will shut down. Office of Personnel Management says all government employees are excused from work on this day because of the paid holiday and all routine business procedures for the Federal Government are switched off.

This includes:

• Federal Administrative Offices

• Federal Courts

• Social Security Offices

• Passport Agencies

United States Postal Service will not deliver regular mail on Presidents’ Day and the Post Offices will be closed. 

Retail postal services will not be available.

Some private delivery service providers may operate on Presidents’ Day.

Are Schools Closed on Presidents Day?

Presidents Day is a federal holiday that celebrates several historical leaders, including George Washington; most public schools across the U.S. will observe this holiday by closing schools. This day will appear on school district academic calendars as being one of the holidays that students and staff will have off for the year. 

Private colleges and universities are also permitted to choose to be open on Presidents’ Day depending on their academic calendar. 

Public Schools, Libraries, and Local Government Offices may be closed but each individual state or local government will have to determine their own motives to be closed. Some private schools and businesses will remain open.

Is the Post Office Open on Presidents Day?

The United States Postal Service does not deliver mail on Presidents Day. 

Post Offices are closed for all business, including retail services. Some private carriers will still deliver on Presidents Day.

Are Banks Closed on Presidents Day?

Almost all banks in the U.S. close for Presidents Day because it is a Federal bank holiday. Also, most stock markets including the New York Stock Exchange also do not open for trading on Presidents Day.
