The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has introduced a significant academic update allowing Class 9 students to study General Mathematics and General Science in the English medium, even if they are enrolled in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, or other regional language mediums. The move is aimed at improving conceptual clarity and helping students prepare better for the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examination.

Major Academic Flexibility for Students

According to the new directive issued by ASSEB Division-I, students currently studying in Class 9 can now opt to learn Maths and Science in English medium while continuing other subjects in their chosen regional language. This step is expected to bridge the gap between language mediums and standardise learning in key STEM subjects.

The board has clarified that this flexibility will be applicable for students preparing for the HSLC/AHM examinations, ensuring they are better equipped for higher education and competitive exams.

Objective Behind the Decision

The decision is aimed at improving academic performance in core subjects like Mathematics and Science, which are often available in English in higher education and national-level entrance exams. ASSEB believes that early exposure to English terminology will help reduce language barriers in future academic pursuits.

Officials also highlighted that students will not be forced to switch their entire medium of instruction, maintaining the importance of regional languages while offering subject-specific flexibility. Schools have been instructed to guide Class 9 students and parents regarding the option during the registration process. The facility will be reflected in the online registration system for HSLC candidates.

The ASSEB’s decision marks a progressive step in Assam’s education system by offering students the choice to study key subjects in English without abandoning their regional language medium. This balanced approach is expected to enhance both accessibility and academic competitiveness among HSLC aspirants.
